From Ain't It Cool News:

I just saw a movie that’ll give your eyes boners, make your balls scream and make you poop DVD copies of THE TRANSPORTER. It’s called 300. I don’t know what the title has to do with the movie, but they could’ve called it KITTENS MAKING CANDLES and it’d still rule.

It’s about these 300 Greek dudes who stomp the sugar-coated **** out of like a million other dudes. I have a feeling that a lot of high school sports coaches are going to show this film to their teams before they play. Also, gay dudes and divorced women are going to use screen captures for computer wallpaper.

The movie takes place about a million years ago, and it’s sort of like a prequel to SIN CITY. Except way less guns and cars but twice as much skull splitting. If you watch this movie and go into a Taco Bell, and say to the cashier, “I need some extra sauce packets” guess what? You’re getting twenty sauce packets because your face will punch him in the brain.

I can’t spoil the plot because THANK GOD THERE ISN’T ONE. Just *** kicking that kicks *** that, while said *** is getting kicked, is kicking yet more *** that’s hitting someone’s balls with a hammer made of ice but the ice is frozen whiskey.

TWO COOL THINGS ABOUT THE MOVIE AND ONE THING I DIDN’T LIKE:

COOL THING ONE:
HEAVY METAL DURING BATTLE SCENES

Who gives a **** if the music isn’t historically correct? LORD OF THE RINGS could’ve used some Journey. This movie has that chu-CHUNG kind of metal that you hear in your head when your shift supervisor at Wetzel’s Pretzel is telling you that you’ll have to stay for clean up and you wish you had a sock filled with quarters in your hand.

COOL THING TWO:
FOES, MINI-BOSSES AND A BIG BOSS

Basically, the Greek dudes are fighting these Persian dudes, but the director, who must have a dick made of three machine guns, does it all like a video game. The Greeks fight every death metal video from the last ten years. There’s wave after wave of giants, freaks, ninjas, mutants, wizards, and a hunchback who looks like he’s got Rosie O’Donnell on his back.

Would I have been happy if Dom DeLuise from HISTORY OF THE WORLD, PART I had shown up? Maybe, but this movie more than makes up for that glaring oversight.

NOT SO GOOD THING:
DUDE NUDITY (“DUDE-ITY”)

These are Greek times, when there were a lot of naked women around. And there are some naked women in this film, but almost every naked woman scene has a muscular dude giving the screen an *** picnic. Dude-ity is something directors put in their movies so people will think they’re serious, I guess, and not just throwing in naked hotties.

Any directors reading this – IT’S OKAY TO JUST THROW IN NAKED HOTTIES.

Can’t someone make a movie about naked Amazons and call it PAUSE BUTTON?

My final analysis is 300 the most ***-ruling movie I’ve seen this year, and will probably be the King of 2007 unless someone makes a movie where a pair of sentient boobs fights a werewolf.

I love reviews better than the movies themselves.

The best record review i ever saw was in the mid 80's in Musician magazine or maybe Guitar Player. But, in the aftermath of the success of "supergroup" Asia all the brit prog rockers were crawling out of the woodwork to put out a "supergroup" record and a video. One of these unholy concoctions was GTR (Guitar, get it?) with Steve Howe and some other dudes. the review stated:

GTR: SHT.

Whoa! Indeed, the best movie review EVAR!

I hadn't realized they were remaking the 1962 film The 300 Spartans. As I watch it again, I can see turning down the sound track and going heavy metal.

The images of this new 300 film look so much more kickass.

It's not a remake of 300 Spartans as far as I know. It's an adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel 300.

I'm rather partial to the idea of making a movie about Amazon hotties and calling it "Pause Button."

If you're counting on an accurate retelling of a historical battle, you're out of luck. If you're looking for a highly stylized "re-imagining" with lots of violence, you probably won't be upset. :)

Yeah, I'm not really looking for historical accuracy. I am looking for some of the ol' Frank Miller ultraviolence.

If you're counting on an accurate retelling of a historical battle, you read Thucydides. If you're looking for a highly stylized "re-imagining" with lots of violence, you probably won't be upset. :)

From the trailers, they did borrow some from the original "The 300 Spartans" and it is supposedly based on the same historical event.

This same line is used both movies: "Our arrows will cover the sun" "So, we will wage war in the shade!" </paraphrased>

I will have to look up Frank Miller and his graphic novel.

Okay, I see that now. I'd still like to see it.

Bang Rajan is one of my all-time favorites in true historic, against all odds battle flicks.

Oliver Stone presents a beautiful and violent Thai film; the true story of a rural 18th century Siamese village that managed to battle an army of 100,000 invading Burmese soldiers to a standstill for five months. When Bang Rajan's fearless warrior chief (Chumporn Taephitak) is wounded in battle, the men of the village elect a mighty rogue fighter who has been making raids on Burmese supply lines, Chan (Jaran Ngamdee), to step in and guide them. Along with the village's sage Buddhist priest (Teerayuth Pratyabamrung), Chan inspires the villagers to new heights of courage. In between bouts of bloodshed there are some subplots. One concerns the wife (Bongkod Kongmalia) of one of the mightiest fighters, Nai In (Winai Kraibutr). She learns she's pregnant, and fears her husband will lose his fighting spirit if he finds out. In another, a young warrior named Muang (Atthakorn Suwannaraj) fights to impress the chief's warrior daughter (Soontree Maila-or). The camera prowls continually among the lush greenery of the Asian jungle, and the beautiful faces and bodies of its people, drawing the viewer deeply into the sense of community, time, and place. The battle scenes are intense, lengthy, and horrific. With its lush cinematography, haunting music, and ensemble of uniformly strong performances, BANG RAJAN deserves a place next to SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and BRAVEHEART in the pantheon of great historical films about war and sacrifice.

Hard rock music displacing sound, while you read subtitles would probably work very well here too, especially since it isn't in English!
