OKLAHOMA 8, ARIZONA 2

The No. 5-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club scored early and often against No. 20 Arizona who was out-manned and outmatched for most of the evening. Luke Rose scored just 39 seconds into the game to put OU up 1-0. Justin Hall scored at the 7:02 mark to give the Sooners a 2-0 lead. In the second period, five different Sooners scored to put the game away. Owen Brewer, Adrian Borchgrevink and Hall scored even-strength goals, Matt Pangrac scored on the power play and Michael Gavranovic added a short-handed tally to give OU an insurmountable 7-0 lead after forty minutes of play. Doug Gebbie scored again for the Sooners at the 1:08 mark of the third period to give OU an eight goal lead. After that, the Sooners coasted and tried to avoid injury in the blowout against an Arizona team that lost what little composure they brought to the arena. After several physical altercations between the two teams on the ice in the period, the IceCats scored two goals late in the game to make tonight’s final 8-2. Oklahoma head coach Larry Donovan expressed his displeasure with the late officiating and the reckless, chippy style of play by Arizona when he tossed a few water bottles onto the ice with less than a minute to go in the game, resulting in an early exit for the Sooners coach.

Sooners goaltender Aaron Schmeilski won his 16th game of the season, stopping 14 of 16 shots he faced. IceCats starting goalie Nick Boddy stopped just 18 of the 25 OU shots he faced before being pulled after the second period. His replacement, Luke Edwall, stopped 10 of 11 shots he endured. OU was 1 for 4 on the power play while Arizona was 0 for 7 with the man advantage.

The win improves Oklahoma’s record on the season to 26-4-0 while Arizona drops to 13-14-0 on the season and out of contention for a spot at the upcoming National tournament. The Sooners host Minot State next Friday night at 7:30 P.M. in Oklahoma City.
