OKLAHOMA 5, ARIZONA 1

The No. 5-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club fell behind No. 20 Arizona early but scored five unanswered goals to beat the IceCats 5-1 Friday night in Oklahoma City. While neither team scored in the first period, OU and Arizona mixed it up in terms of physicalities as numerous offsetting roughing penalties were assessed in the stanza. In the second period, Arizona scored just over a minute in to take an early 1-0 lead. However, Luke Rose slipped the puck past Arizona’s goaltender at 5:23 of the period to tie the game and shift the momentum in favor of the Sooners. A hard-working, blue-collar shift paid off for Ryan Kenney, who went top shelf to give OU a 2-1 lead at the 9:49 mark. Adrian Borchgrevink scored his team-leading 22nd goal at 11:25 to put the Sooners up 3-1, a lead they would take to the second intermission. In the third period, Owen Brewer took a beautiful Borchgrevink feed and buried it into the IceCats’ net just over two minutes into the period to make the score 4-1. The penalty minutes piled up in the third as the physical play led to numerous altercations between Arizona and OU. After the mutual combat simmered down for the evening, Justin Hall capped the scoring for the Sooners with 18 seconds left in the game to make tonight’s final 5-1.

Sooners goaltender Aaron Schmeilski won his 15th game of the season, stopping 15 of 16 shots he faced. IceCats goalie Nick Boddy stopped 27 of OU’s 32 shots. OU was 1 for 10 on the power play while Arizona was 0 for 7 with the man advantage. Oklahoma was whistled for 40 minutes worth of penalties on the evening. Meanwhile, Arizona racked up 102 penalty minutes, including four ten-minute misconducts, one game misconduct and two game disqualifications. Arizona’s roster is already depleted as the IceCats played tonight with 15 skaters and two goalies and tonight’s disqualifications mean that Arizona will be short two more skaters tomorrow evening.

The win improves Oklahoma’s record on the season to 25-4-0 while Arizona drops to 13-13-0 on the season. The Sooners host Arizona again tomorrow night at 8:30 P.M. in Oklahoma City.
