Ay carumba. Wow. Wade Phillips. Wade. Phillips.

WADE PHILLIPS!

WADE PHILLIPS!

I'm speechless. I thought when the scab players were better than the regular team during the strike it was rock bottom.

Wade Phillips.

:(

I think I'll go vomit.

Just a fill in until Garrett takes over in Jerry's perfect plan, probably the first year of the new stadium.

Talk about underwhelmed. Again.

Wade Phillips was the Broncos' coach between Dan Reeves and Mike Shanahan, both of whom took Denver to Super Bowls.
Wade Phillips was the Bills' coach who made the "brilliant" decision to start Rob Johnson at quarterback over Doug Flutie, who had rejuvenated the franchise in the post-Marv Levy days.
That tells you all you need to know about Wade Phillips. The only thing going for him is that he was Bum's son. Heck, I would have rather had Norv Turner than this buffoon.
I give it three years at best. Then, maybe they'll give Jason Garrett the job instead of going through another dog and pony show.

i've listened to alot of analysis on this hire and i think jerry made the decision he thought was best for the organization

the team (personnel wise) is locked in to the 3-4 defense.......one of the former players said that defensive specialists are generally better on offense than the offensive specialists are on defense......phillips has had some success with his 3-4 defenses

i dont care how exciting he appears at press conferences or on the sidelines.....anybody remember Mr Landry? stoic faced all the time

bringing in some unproven hot coach du jour wasnt really the answer for this kind of team......so it was down to phillips or turner and personally i'd take phillips over turner

i'm going to give him a fair chance

time will tell

I think this played a HUGE role in his hire. And the timing of Parcells departure. It all points back to Parcells screwing the organization because he's an arrogant piece of monkey ****.

I actually think JJ hired Phillips for better reasons than he hired Parcells. The only reason behind the Parcells hire was to get enough excitement to get Jerryworld approved. Mission accomplished.

GrapevineSooner
2/9/2007, 11:49 AM
Same here.

Defense is the problem with this team, not offense. You could have hired Norv, but who would you get to be the defensive coordinator?

And don't say Ron Rivera. I have a feeling the only way he leaves Chicago is for another head coaching job somewhere.

It's underwhelming to be sure. But his specialty is defense and that's what ails the Cowboys the most.

jk the sooner fan
2/9/2007, 11:56 AM
i'm really more curious to see what kind of staff he puts together, there are 4-5 open spots......that will be the tale tell sign

according to reports, Wade has gotten tons of calls from coaches wanting to work for him

2/9/2007, 12:11 PM
If you're seriously comparing WADE PHILLIPS to Tom Landry in any way you need to duck because I'm throwing stuff at you right now.

All of that blah blah crap that JJ was spouting was just that, crap. "uh, he has a winning record...um yeah, that's it!" What is he? 48-42 or something. BARELY a winning record. He has had a chance or two or three or four. He freaking sucks. As a coordinator I'm sure he would be great but he can't be a head coach.

JJ is just hiring whoever for a couple of years to suck the life and money out of Cowboys fans. Phillips or Turner? Would yuo rather have someone throw monkey poo or dog poo at you?

You hear that sound? That's NY, Philly, and Worshington laughing thier heads off.

Ugh.

You need to see this from an outside perspective. It's very refreshing. Dallas just became the laughingstock of the NFL.

Landry was stoic but stately. Wade Phillips looks like Lou Costello walking around going, "duh, whatdoIdo Abbooooottttt?"

2/9/2007, 12:37 PM
OK Boarder,

Who would YOU hire? ;)

Boarder
2/9/2007, 12:42 PM
Honestly I don't know. Probably Ron Rivera or the Colts dude. They aren't proven head coaches, but they aren't proven losers. I can tell you I would NOT hire Wade Phiilips or Norv Turner. Or Denny Green or (insert any number of rehash coaches that lose all the time). It's not like they didn't have a chance.

Boarder
2/9/2007, 12:47 PM
Who would YOU hire? Because you can not possibly be happy that they hired Wade Phillips. There's no WAY you can be happy about it. I can see in some warped demented way that someone could want owens (spit!) since he can (occasionally) catch a ball. But other than Jerry Jones and Wade himself, I have not heard of anyone who is not saying, "Wade Phillips? You serious? Wade Phillips?"

ESPN radio was getting a bunch of pity calls from other teams' fans yesterday. They were like, "Man, sorry about that. That sucks for you. I'd like to gloat but dang, that's cold."

GrapevineSooner
2/9/2007, 12:51 PM
Fair enough.

Of course, being an assistant on a Super Bowl team doesn't necessarily mean you'll be a good head coach.

At least with Phillips, you know that he has a good track record of improving the records of the teams he takes over in the very first year.

Jim Coleman and Ron Rivera are relatively unknown quantities. You'd be more apt to take a shot in the dark with them if you were 5-11 last year.

But not if you were a playoff team last season.

Boarder
2/9/2007, 01:23 PM
Have you seen those stats? He made Denver go from 8-8 to 9-7. With ELWAY. The next season they were back to 7-9 and he got booted.

With the Bills, it was 6-10 with Levy who had Kerry Collins the year after Kelly retired. Then with Phillips they went 10-6, playoff loss, 11-5, playoff loss, then 8-8 fired. The offense went 7, 16, and 20. Down each year.

He's just not good! All of that smoke that JJ was spouting was another part of the big middle finger that he's giving to Cowboy fans.

SoonerGirl06
2/9/2007, 01:34 PM
I'm sorry, but I just don't see Phillips taking the team anywhere.

I shake my head in disgust that JJ continues to play his ego-maniacle games and hires "Has Been" Coaches. Sure, they may have great in their prime, but their prime days of coaching have passed.

IMO the Cowboys need someone who's going to take them somewhere BEYOND the first round of the play-offs... a fresh new face who's willing to do what it takes to get to the Super Bowl. Unfortunately JJ doesn't want to hire someone with that kind of potential because if he does, that means he's going to have to give up control and he just ain't gonna to do that.

Unfortunately I think we are stuck with Wade the rest of the season no matter what...Jerry doesn't want to shell out the dough to bring in a new coach, or promote Garrett and then bring in another DC.

Wade does need to go though. We don't know what he is like away from the media, but his press conferences just drive me nuts now. Mumbling some sorry explanations about well if this had happened we would have won the game. You lost to freaking Titans for crying out loud. I know they aren't a cake walk, but they are certainly beatable, especially at home, and especially because Vince Young is an awful QB.

The guys on the Ticket made good points that it just doesn't seem like Wade demands excellence from his players. 12 penalties for 130 something yards is ridiculous. NFL schedule makers didn't do the Cowboys any favors this year and set up just a treacherous lineup of opponents, but they are way too good to be 1-3.

One thing is for certain, short of winning the Super Bowl, Wade does need to go at the end of this season.

I agree with Steve Young to a degree.

The problem isn't talent, and the problem isn't necessarily coaching.

The problem just built that billion dollar stadium and has all but done the Ted Turner head coaching gig in tearing down his own "creation" before getting the right people in the right positions to do the right job.

Same story, different chapter this week....Cowboys totally undisciplined. Rack up a bunch of unnecessary penalties...Shoot themselves in the foot with bad turnovers. Wade won't take any accountability. Jerry needs to step up, fire Wade and tell the guys he's gonna start firing them next.

Fire Wade, promote DeCamillas as interim HC(seems like about the only guy that has the balls to get after the players). Campo calls the D and Garrett still calls the offense.

While it sucks that the Cowboys suck this year, it's probably the best possible scenario for the Rangers. Sure if the Rangers were in the position they are now, but the Cowboys were anything better than 4-2, the Rangers spotlight would be dimmed with Cowboys talk.

Almost everyone in the Metroplex has jumped on board the Ranger's bandwagon and I'm hoping that with the success of this post season and the new ownership, DFW can finally become a great baseball town as well.

With the debt load the Cowboys have now due to JerryWorld the team is heavily leveraged....much like the Hicks Sports Group franchises are/were.
So that ain't going to change unless he goes broke Tom Hicks style.....

I don't think Romo is the problem, that was evident today as Kitna had balls bouncing off receivers hands into defenders hands all day until he threw one completely his own fault. Romo ain't Troy or Roger but he is better than any they have had since Troy. The problem is much like OU under Blake or UT this season, the coaching staff has talent on the field...they just seem to have no idea what to do with them or how to get them into playing like a team.

I don't.

He lost my sympathy earlier this year when he invited a reporter at a press conference to step into his office and discuss football after said reporter asked why the Cowboys don't put an emphasis on reducing penalties.

There's a part of me that hopes Jerry punishes Wade by forcing him to coach through the end of the year.

ouleaf
11/8/2010, 09:43 AM
Welp, what are the odds Wade makes it to his 3pm press conference? Just listening to Jerry after the game, I think even he has raised the white flag and realizes he can't wait til the end of the season. The longer you keep Wade as HC, the more ingrained this give up, poor effort mentality becomes across the team. I also don't think Wade is very motivated at this point, b/c he already knows he has lost a job, it's just a matter of when the axe is going to drop.

They are officially the worst team in football now, I don't even care if the Bills have a worse record. The Bills are at least competitive and I'm positive the Bills would win if they squared off today. This team is bad, they rollover everyweek and are going to continue to do so as long as Wade is head coach.
