The DoD has confrimed the last four helos we lost in SWA in recent weeks were shot down by the jihaadis. Methinks it's time for new tactics.

I am reminded of what Adolf Galland said about airpower generally: " thunderbolt launched from an eggshell."

Methinks helicopters are much more eggshell-ly than fixed wing aircraft.

Has their relevance on the modern battlefield become eclipsed by the relative ease at which they can be taken out?

Discuss.

I had a prof that referred to them as giant fatigue testing machines.

I dunno, the ability to land on small patches of ground makes 'em great for fightin' in the mountains and jungles. And ability to hover from above makes 'em good for scouting in some (including urban) areas.

That said, in big *** wide open areas fixed-wing craft are prolly superior because of speed and altitude. So, in desert warfare I don't know why we'd need many helicopters 'cept for transportin' big-wigs in an' outta the green zone.
