View Full Version : Car question

I'll go ahead and admit it...I know little to nothing about cars. That said...

Recently (over the past 5 days or so), when it's been cold, the clutch on my Accord doesn't seem to work very well...specifically getting into reverse, and even slightly when I'm shifting from 1st to 2nd. When the car warms up, the problem almost disappears...but today it seemed to be a little worse...

...any ideas? Fluid problems with the clutch, maybe?

Give your clutch a sweater.

Pretty normal, depending on how cold it is. Every clutch I've ever owned did the same thing when it was really cold.

Check your transmission fluid level too!

You should have a resevoir for hydraulic clutch fluid. Check it. Most of the cars with hydraulic clutches take regular brake fluid.

The transmission fluid could be setting up because of the cold. I had an old mustang that did the same thing. It used 80W90 gear oil. Most of the newer cars use a thinner oil or automatice transmission fluid though.

How many miles on this ride ? is city or hwy milage
Dont just check the tranny fluid , Change it .
A jiffy lube type place will do it for pretty cheap .
If it keeps up you may have some excessive wear in the synchronise rs .
Also try letting the car warm up for about 5 minutes befor trying to drive .

Sounds like your clutch. How many miles do you have on it? I have almost 250,000 on my original Honda Accord clutch. Those hydraulic clutches should last a long time, unless of course, you drive with your foot on the clutch or you are a hard shifter...

Have you ever changed your gear lube? You might want to do that first, but typically, the reverse goes first then the 1st and 2nd gear goes if your clutch is going...

'bout 150K miles on the car...the transmission fluid was changed about 10K miles ago, and I'm due for an oil change anyway, so I'll try that first. I'll see if they can check the clutch fluid, too...I'm not a hard shifter, and I definitely don't drive with my foot on the clutch, but you never know...

Move South.

That would be Texas.

So no. :D

That, and I have ~2 more years of school to go. :D

Does it only do it when its cold ?

Depends on how far South. Mexico should be largely vacant in a few years.

I think so. It really didn't start acting like this until ICE STORM OF DEATH 2007.

Take this all with a grain of salt, though, it could have been deteriorating slowly and I just didn't notice.

But it definitely seems like it only happened recently, when it got plenty cold, and it's worse the colder it is. I hope I'm not just convincing myself this is true.

It sounds like gyroscopic precession to me. Get your vacuum pump checked out.

But does it STILL do it after youve driven it and the temp rises ?

Not nearly as bad. The drive in question only takes about 15 minutes, mostly highway, but when I'm near work on mainly city streets, the shifting seems easier.

And while you are at it, check the blinker fluid. It is very sensitive to cold weather.

It might be low on elbow grease. Pick up a quart of that, too.

my clutch went out at 150k on my civic last january

I was having some slight shifting problems before it did go out, especially in the cold.

I own a 95 Honda Civic and it acts goofy shifting in the cold, too. When it warms up it's fine. I'd get it looked at just to make sure. I'm fixing to get mine looked at, too. :D
