View Full Version : The 4 black and white movies I really like

Lifeboat - 12 Angry Men - Citizen Kane - To Kill a Mockingbird

Any time any of the above movies come on, I'm automatically in for the duration. I love them. As for any other B&W movies, I can't get into them, but I'm sure there are some great classics out there that I'm missing out on.

I tried Casablanca one time, but I couldn't get past the opening 20 minute snooze fest in the bar. That ones out.

Any suggestions?

Were you correcting my spelling or offering a suggestion for a movie I already said I liked? The list was only 4 movies, so surely you were able to pick that one out. ;)

I should clarify. As a whole, I'm not a fan of most "older" movies (60's and earlier). Mostly b/c I've never given them a chance.

I liked Patton a lot. I heard "The Bridge Over the River Kwai" was good.

Yes, and yes it was.

"Schindler's List" and "Chinatown" are also great b&w movies.

And try again with "Casablanca," tbl. Maybe you weren't in the right frame of mind before. It's an excellent movie.

I'm getting a copy of "On the Beach", which I haven't seen since it came out in '59 or '60, but have positive memories. I'll offer a report.

The Birds- Alfred Hitchcock

I thought The Birds was in color. Still a good movie though. Hitchcock's most famous film, Psycho, is in black and white. Other good Hitchcock films include Rear Window, and my personal favorite of his, North by Northwest, but those are both in color.

Another one you might try is The Maltese Falcon. Bogart is one of the all-time great actors, and this is one of his best roles.

I really like Roman Holiday. And I'm not even gay.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the original King Kong yet. Not a masterpiece - but entertaining.

I don't like a lot of older movies because the acting seems so over the top to me. It's like the actors hadn't yet realized that they can be more subtle and nuanced on film than they could be on stage.

I don't see how any sentient being can say "Casablanca blows."
Heck, the scene where they sing the Marseillaise in the bar is better than many entire movies. Y'all MUST be Satan-worshipping pedophiles is all I can figure. ;)

High Noon also rawks.

I think the next B&W movie I rent will be Seven Samurai. I only saw it once, in college, and I want to see it again. It was the inspiration and model for the Maginficent Seven, y'know.

This is true in many cases. I just watched The Searchers (John Wayne, Technicolor.) I'd love to see a more modern director tackle that story, without some of the cliches, hamming (Jeffery Hunter) and hokey stereotypes - and without the speaking Indians all being played by white actors.

I was getting ready for my ballet class the other night, changing into my leotard in a bathroom stall. A couple of teenagers came into the bathroom and were discussing the announcement they had just heard that the adult ballet class was about to begin.

Girl One: We have an adult ballet class at this school?

Girl Two: Yeah! Isn't that great? I think old people are so cute when they do stuff like that.

That came on TV one night recently and I couldn't get into it at all. The dialog just droned on and on.... I was very distracted by kids and such, so maybe when it's nice and quiet it'd be different.
