OKLAHOMA 3, IOWA STATE 2 (SO)

The No. 4-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club rebounded from yesterday’s tough loss with a gritty performance this afternoon as they beat No. 6 Iowa State 3-2 in a shootout in a game played at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. OU struck first with a power play goal from Luke Rose just 8:39 into the contest to take an early 1-0 lead. Iowa State tied the game with a goal just over a minute into the second period. In the third period, Keith Denton put the Sooners on top 2-1 with a goal at 1:18 of the period. However, Iowa State tied the game again at 13:36 of the third. After a scoreless five-minute, four-on-four overtime, the teams headed to a shootout to decide the winner.

This afternoon’s shootout saw Iowa State score on their first two scoring attempts whereas Adrian Borchgrevink was the only Sooner to score in OU’s first two attempts. The third and fourth shooters for both OU and Iowa State missed their attempts, leaving Iowa State leading the shootout 2-1 going into the 5th shooter. OU’s Matt Pangrac scored to tie the shootout at 2 and Aaron Schmeilski denied ISU’s fifth shooter sending the shootout to the sudden death phase. The sixth shooter for both Oklahoma and Iowa State missed their attempts. Borchgrevink scored again and Schmeilski denied Iowa State’s shooter to win the shootout 3-2 and the game by the same score.

Schmeilski stopped 25 of the 27 ISU shots he faced on the evening while his counterpart, ISU’s Trent Baker, officially made 36 saves on 39 shots. OU was 1 for 8 on the power play while ISU was held scoreless on each of their four power play opportunities.

The win improves OU’s record to 24-4-0 while Iowa State drops to 22-9-1. The Sooners return home to face Arizona on Friday, February 9th.
