Eleventh place in Big 12 endowments, that is.

The Chronicle for Higher Education just published its annual report on the market value of college and university endowments. The figures reported ar as of June, 2006:

http://chronicle.com/premium/stats/endowments/endowment_results.php3?State_Type=All_states&Order=1&Year=2007&limit=-1

You will probably need a password to access the link. Here are the big 12 results:

4. Texas, $13.2 billion
10. Texas A&M, $5.64 billion
53. Nebraska, $1.15 billion
58. Kansas, $1.05 billion
65. Oklahoma, $960 million
68. Missouri, $944 million
73. Baylor, $870 million
101. Colorado, $590 million
116. Texas Tech, $540 million
127. Iowa State, $496 million
149. Aggy, $382 million
184. Kansas State, $295 million

Texas and A&M are ridiculosly wealthy due to the Texas PUF. You have to hand it to Texas, they did the right thing for higher ed when they endowed it with all that oil money.

OU has prospered to an incredible degree under David Boren, and will easily surpass one billion dollars by the next reporting period, if it hasn't already. OU has passed Colorado, Baylor, and now Missouri in endowment levels since Boren took over. Oklahoma is 19th among public universities in size of endowment funds.

Talking about David Boren's endowment makes me uncomfortable.

Basically, it's a permanant source of funding. For example, there are often "endowed chairs" for faculty, which means the money will always be there to fund that position. Unless it's Williams doing the endowing, in which case the funding disappeared when they went south along with the rest of the Tulsa economy. An endowment is typically (always?) a pile of money sitting in a bank account and generating interest income. The interest is what is spent, and the endowment doesn't get touched.

I'm under the impression that Nose Pickens' gift is all athletic--no endowment dollars.

I think Boone tossed a little to academics in his first round of giving. NU's academic fundraising has really taken off the last few years too.

Look at K-State! I think they are behind Rose State and OCCC. They should make Snyder the president of the university since he was able to raise the football program from the dead.

Boone's donations are typically earmarked for the funding of building projects or for other specific needs. In his latest rounds of giving, the gifts that have made you people aware of his existence, the majority of his money was earmarked for athletic construction. He has given multiple millions to academic causes, most recently a large % of the $30 million gift a few years back.

Kansas is pretty much the same as OU with how they have their money. Doctors and lawyers and such.

ya we're broke, but per capita more alumni donate than any other big 12 school. We just don't have any billionaires.

There's a reason for that. Your alumni typically need to be educated when they graduate from the university.
