View Full Version : Who's the richest person you know personally?

I'm being crass, here; talking about money. Not being rich in the really important stuff like love, family, friends, health, freedom, peace of mind, faith, SF.com sponsorships, etc. Nope, none of that really good stuff, just MONEY.

I know a guy who is the top dog of a utility company. His daughters go to school with mine (they could definitely afford a much more expensive school.) The guy recently got about $7 million in stock options. He's a real down to earth guy, smallish, humble, polite, considerate, very smart of course, just like your average Joe, but he drives a brand new shiny black Aston-Martin. He said it's supposed to go 192 mph, but he's only gotten it up to 150. I haven't asked to drive it yet.

Last month, his family hosted a Christmas party for the girls on the school soccer team. Instead of giving directions to his house, he just hired two stretch Caddy Escalades to haul the girls over there. His wife is a sweety, too. Just like all the other moms, except for the bank account. His girls are nice too. Mrs TU was collecting money ($18) for some sweat shirts, and the girl wanted to know if we had change for a fifty. Heck, I'm flush if I've got $20 on me at any given time, including the change wearing a hole in my Dockers.

Anyway, them be the wealthiest folks I know.

You mean, like hang out with, or just have met.

Because I'll win if it's just have met. Unless jkm has actually met Bill Gates...

Anyways, the company I work for is owned by Berkshire Hathaway, and I had the honor of meeting it's owner a while back.

Warren Buffet

Most of the wealthy people I know won't actually come out and say how much they're worth, either that or I just won't ask them.

Since I got into trucking, every company I've worked for had a millionaire owner. The richest being Roger Hardesty from Tulsa, but I never actually met him. In fact, I can't think of any time I was employed by a poor person.

A guy named Hughes Dillard. He's the patron of the Young Conservatives of Texas and a Baylor grad.

On top of being loaded he knows damned near every politician, lawyer, and judge in the state of Texas. He's one of those "larger than life" figures that you rarely have the opportunity to meet let alone get to know very well. The guy is HIGHLY eccentric and somewhat crazy, but he's an absolute freaking riot. I could sit here and tell Hughes stories all night.

Used to hang out alot with the son of a hugely successful transplant surgeon, did the first transplant surgery in this state, basically owned Baptist Hospital for awhile, designed & built the contraption which keeps your blood alive during heart transplants and has been selling these deals for like 30 years all over the stinkin world. The dude is freaking loaded but a very nice guy. As down to earth as someone like that could be. I don't know if he (my friend's dad) is still alive or not but I think it's every man's dream to live like this guy did into his 70's.

I am sure Booger will be superized to know this. I have had the pleasure of one of the Walton's come to my house for a high school keg party. I am not going to say his name, for fear I might get sued for some kind of Paris Hilton-esk popperazi raid. Going to high school in Bentonville everyone that is even remotely high on the charts at Wal-Mart is rich. One of my best friends father is a VP for sams and he always let us know that he was above us. I did get some money out of the guy. Whenever he knew I was coming Vern Sr would call me on my cell phone and say WEBB! PICK ME UP A BAG OF BURGERS AND 2 LARGE CHOCOLATE SHAKES! All of that was just for him...not his son. He would give me like 50 bucks even though it only cost 15 or so. Good times...good times...

Oh PLEEEZE, does dear old Dad have MONEY ?!? I SPECIFICALLY said in the opening post that this is thread is about crass wealth: money, gelt, moolah, Dollars, Euros, Pounds, Pesos, Zlotys. etc. Get it? I SPECIFICALLY said that the real important riches that money can't buy (love, family, friends & stuff) are NOT part of this thread.
Now go back and read the first post, and then write 500 times: "I will read the question before I try to answer it."
And if you don't come back with some story about how you changed Howard Hughes's bed pans, you owe me a kajillion bazillion vDollars !!!

Had two places in Palm Springs.
Leased a private jet from Prince that could fly from OKC to France, non-stop. Spent a month in France every summer, followed by a month on a 3 masted schooner (private) in the Caribbean. His godfather is T. Boone - and I did meet him at some receptions.

Mr. Baja's current boss probably has much more money, but in order to help keep his job, I won't elaborate.

Had a client I did some drinking with in the late 70's. He was in the oil exploration business and quite successful, but still a country blue collar goober at heart. We were out one night at a tavern on Grand Lake and he kept going out to the car to make a phone call. (Not many people had car phones in that time.) After one call he apologized and explained that they were going to perforate a prospective well that evening and he was wanting to know if it was as good as the geologist said. He said, "the geologist says if this thing comes in like it looks on the logs we gonna be rich." He took a big drink from his long neck and said, "Shows what a dumb arse he is. We already rich."

His net worth was in the range of $50 million in '78. Worth a lot more today.
