i realize you're not an eye doctor, but i saw something saturday evening that puzzled me

a woman with a little girl, who was no more than one year old - the kid had on eyeglasses

as detailed as i remember eye exams to be "does it look better with this? or with this?"

how do they do an eye exam with a child who cant communicate enough to complete that kind of eye exam?

I'm not really sure. Eye docs have got some cool machines to play with, I'd guess one of them does the trick. What's really cool is that ear docs can determine an infants hearing with something called BAER(brainstem auditory evoked response) (http://www.lsu.edu/deafness/baerexpl.htm). Somehow it determines whether or not you hear the test signal, even if you can't communicate. Maybe they use something similar.

BTW: That link above is on dogs, but somehow they do something similar to humans. I've never seen one done to tell you how it differs.
Here's a better link (although I never answered your original question. :D) http://www.chsd.org/1799.cfm

I have a nephew that has worn glasses since he was around a year old. I thought it was strange back then, he is around 20 now.
