Well?

And I mean, do you like olives of any single kind?

I will post my reason for this thread after I have a decent idea of the skew.

Love olives. Prefer black over green but will eat either. Love them on pizza, with rice, noodles, salad, sandwiches. Love the oil too. And they have the good fat too which is a bonus.

My dad used to pop green olives into the cheap light beer he drank. If you drink that watery stuff the green olives actually help believe it or not.

Seriously? It amazes me the food that some people have never tried. I mean how do you get through life for more than a few years and not have an olive? It's not like it's some exotic or rare food. They are everywhere. I think that guy on the Travel Channel (one of my new favorites) has a great job, going all over the world and trying food. 'Cept he has a fancy for monkey brains. Not having tried them I'm not exactly knocking them but he seems to enjoy the shock-factor of it. Either the food's good or it's not, regardless of the drama.

PG, all olives are not the same, as you can tell from the responses here. Some love one kind/color and not another.

Love olives - Lucques olives are the greatest. Picholines are good as well. Love a tapenade spread (that's a dish consisting of pureed or finely chopped black olives, capers, anchovies, and olive oil. It may also contain garlic, herbs, tuna, lemon juice, or brandy-- thanks wikipedia!) on toast with goat cheese and roasted peppers. Love a hot and spicy olive mix too. Or one with cinnamon and cardamom. Love to eat them while drinking dark beer or scotch or vodka.

If your only exposure to olives is the canned kind that comes on pizza or "pimento" (if you like peppers with no heat of flavor) stuffed ones soaked in brine you'd assume all olives are tinny salty odd things. They're not. They can be awesome.

I guess I just don't get all the "texture" and "gag" deal some of y'all have.

I can remember gagging a couple times over food, but I'm pretty sure most other people would have too. My sister held me down and fed me a big ol' hunk of canned spinach one time. I gagged more from having spinach shoved down my throat than anything.

The other time I gagged was when I got a carton of chocolate milk from the 7-11 to go with my chocolate donuts. I had a big mouth full of donuts, opened the milk and took a big ol' swig to wash down the donuts - and the milk had chunks. Wasn't so much the texture as the smell/taste. Sour milk pretty much tastes like ***.

Oh yeah, I do remember one other time. I was in Cold Weather Survival training in Camp Drum, NY. We had one live chicken per squad. For a week in the woods. The instructor showed us how to quickly dispatch said chicken, and if you really wanted to get all the nourishment available, to suck the blood coming out of the neck. You also were to eat the heart. Anyhow, I behead the bird, start sucking the blood, and I get a hunk of something - maybe vein, skin, feather, coochie - and it lodges in my throat. I'm over there involuntarily gagging with the damn bird bleeding all over me. After we boiled the bird in a #10 can, it wasn't too bad.

If I smell Creme de cacao I'll automatically gag. Back when I was a teenager, I raided my grandmothers liquor cabinet. So that she wouldn't notice one particular liquor hammered down, I topped off everything in the cabinet. The last thing I remember drinking in large volumes was the Creme de cacao. I had a 2 day hangover from that one. It's actually the only hangover I ever had in my life, but it was baaaaaad.

That said, I love olives. Any kind of olive I can think of, I eats em.

No doubt. Nothing chaps my *** more than offering something to somebody and they go "ooh, I hate that." I go "have you ever tried it?" They go "no, but I know I hate it." Or worse yet "yes, one time when I was 2 my dad made me eat ......... and I know I still hate it."

Every single one of my kids - and my brothers and sisters - will eat anything you put in front of them. Yes, one of the boys doesn't really care for mushrooms, and another isn't keen on peas, but they'll eat them if served.

Why? Cause they were raised that way. If you are one of those people who hates everything (except french fries and burgers) or if you have those kids who turn their nose up at every dang thing that's good for them then you have received or are providing ****ty parenting. Teaching your kids about proper nutrition is at least as important as teaching them about good/bad behavior.

It isn't "cute" when junior goes "oh no thanks, I hate tomatoes." It makes me want to slap the parent.

I agree. All kids are naturally picky and will refuse to eat something, claiming they don't like it (when they've never tried it), bit for adults to be like that is ridiculous. When I married my wife, she wouldn't eat steak, roast, ham, sushi, and tons of other things b/c her whole life her family had spoiled her. When they'd all eat chicken fried steak, they'd make her a piece of chicken. That crap doesn't fly in my house. Suffice to say she eats it all now (and actually likes it).

My daughter is a beast too. She's picky just like any kid, but I get her to try stuff (she'll be 3 this Saturday). When you go to a Chinese buffet, she'll eat anything you put on her plate and she loves it.

Ah, and you are correct. I do it all the time now at the house. Little Johnny comes over, and momma puts a great meal on the table, and little Johnny goes "ooh, what's that? Gross. I hate (insert any vegetable here)."

My wife immediately starts kicking me under the table cause she knows I'm fixin' to go "look you ungrateful little ****, in my house you eat what's put in front of you or get up from the table and shut your filthy little hole."

What's funny about this is that I've intimidated several kids into actually trying things. Like cooked cabbage ("hey, that's not bad, tastes kinda like potatoes"), tomatoes ("well I always just thought they were gross cause my mom hates them"), and even brussells sprouts.

If you let your kids dictate to you what they'll eat, you're gonna have some really unhealthy/poor eating kids when they become adults.

I've never been a huge fan of raw bell pepper. My wife loves them. She slices them up and puts them on the table all summer long when the garden is going. The kids eat them like candy. Love em'. I pick one up every so often and eat it. The more I do it, the more I like them. They'll never replace corn, peas, beans, etc., but I've grown to like them, and if kids are exposed/made to eat certain foods while young they do learn to acquire a taste for it.

This is true. One anchovy will spoil a perfectly good pizza.

A friend of mine has a theory on any food that is popular-- somewhere in the world there is a perfect example of that food that justifies why people love it. For example, he hated the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich, thought it was gross. That was until he went to Philadelphia and had one that was cooked where the flavors came together and made it very good.

So somewhere out there, maybe Italy, there is a way a salty minnow goes with cheese and tomatoes and bread to make it extra tasty. I just gotta believe.

You can tell the good hillbillies from the bad at the Chinese restaurant.

Bad hillbillies go straight to the fried bread, fried chicken, fried rice, fried eggrolls, and anything else that's fried crispy. And egg drop soup.

Good hillbillies get the snow peas, carrots, onions, brocolli, water chesnuts, bamboo shoots, bok choy, and everything crunchy, green, yellow, red, orange, and gooooood. And hot and sour or wonton soup.

Dad's a real hillbilly from Big Mud, Kentucky. It's not even a real town, just an "area" where he was born. Some of the uncles, born in the same house have a different town listed on their birth certificates. So, now that you are satisfied with Dad's credentials, he makes some great hillbilly food. Pickled corn and his "100 year old sourdough mix" both in big crocks in the basement. If you were to discover those crocks it'd seem like some wierd science experiment but, I have to admit, both are great food.

I dig me some anchovies. Nothing like a "real" Caesar salad dressing.

The food that always fools me is liver 'n onions. Smells so damn good that about once a year I'll try it at some greasy spoon diner. Never do like it but I always have to try it again just to make sure.

Carry on.
