Dang, the d00d musta had a very weak neck. The Nazis used to hang people with piano wire (the stuff inside the piano that the padded hammers strike when a key is played) and no one's head ever came off. They used piano wire presumably because its particularly painful. Heck, a vengeful Hitler hanged at least 20 people that way in the wake of the failed assasination/coup attempt at the "Wolfs Lair" in 1944.

Only thing I can figure is they could have used very narrow gauge wire, the drop must have been long, and they must have tied a lot of weight to the guy's ankles.

IOW, it had to have been deliberate. This sort of thing simply shouldn't happen under normal hanging circumstances.

well, if you are using the piano wire method as a guage, you have to know how far the Nazis dropped them from

if the guy was too heavy and they dropped him from too high/gave him too long of a rope the momentum could be an issue

You're prolly right. The Nazis didn't drop them from very far. It was really more of strangulation exercise when they used the piano wire method of hanging.
