OKLAHOMA 5, WEBER STATE 3

The No. 3-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club rebounded from its first home loss of the season with a 5-3 win over Weber State University Saturday afternoon in Oklahoma City. The first period was filled with penalties, fourteen in total, with one of them being a five-minute major penalty assessed against OU’s Greg Curtiss late in the period. Playing four-on-four hockey due to a Weber State penalty while OU killed the major, Sooners defenseman Robert Hetrick let loose a laser shot from the point that found its way into the Wildcat net at 18:25, giving the Sooners a 1-0 lead. In the second period, it appeared as if the wheels were going to fall off the Sooners’ bus as Weber State scored two goals 45 seconds apart, one of them a short-handed goal, to take a 2-1 lead. Weber State scored again less than three minutes later to take a 3-1 lead and it looked as if the Sooners would suffer their second straight defeat at home. However, Sooners forward Sean Castle scored unassisted at 12:20 and Wil Petty ripped a short-handed slapshot past the WSU goalie at 16:17 to tie the game at 3-3. During OU’s first power plat of the third period, Sooners defenseman Michael Gavranovic sent a shot from the point that found the top corner of the net to give OU a 4-3 lead at 6:38. The game was still very much in doubt late in the period as the Sooners had to kill off three WSU power plays. The Sooners’ defense stood strong in the face of Weber State’s adversity and forward Owen Brewer ended up icing the game for OU with an empty net goal just four seconds from the final buzzer to preserve the victory for Oklahoma by a score of 5-3.

Sooners goalie Chad Helgason stopped 22 of the 25 Weber State shots he faced on the evening. Wildcats goaltender Kyle Gover made 24 saves on 28 shots. OU was 1 of 8 on the power play while Weber State’s potent power play went 0 for 9 with the man advantage.

The win was Oklahoma’s 23rd of the season, setting a new OU Hockey record for most wins in a season. The Sooners are now 23-3-0 on the season while Weber State drops to 6-15-0. The Sooners’ next game is in two weeks when they visit Ames, Iowa to take on Big XII rival Iowa State University on January 26th.
