The No. 3-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club lost its first home game of the season tonight as the Weber State University Wildcats beat OU 5-3 on an icy Friday night in Oklahoma City. Weber State literally arrived at the Blazers Ice Centre less than an hour before game time due to the treacherous travel conditions and dressed only thirteen skaters, but they showed no signs of bus-lag or intimidation as they took charge early on. The Wildcats scored at 10:26 and again at 13:16 to take a stunning 2-0 lead over the Sooners that carried to the first intermission. Forward Michael Gray started the scoring for Oklahoma with a goal just 25 seconds into the second stanza to bring OU within one goal of Weber State. After another Weber State goal made the score 3-1, forwards Adrian Borchgrevink and Kyle Allan scored for OU to knot the game at three goals apiece. The Sooners appeared to have the momentum as the third period began but the Wildcats took advantage of a second-chance rebound at the top of the Sooners’ crease and put it home to give Weber State a 4-3 lead just 38 seconds into the last period. Throughout the remainder of the period, Oklahoma tried to muster a rally and tie the game but it was to no avail as OU could not get its offense in gear or counter Weber State’s energized prevent defense. Weber State added an empty net goal with one second left in the game to secure tonight’s upset win over Oklahoma by a score of 5-3.
Sooners goalie Ryan Anderson stopped 17 of the 21 Weber State shots he faced on the evening. Wildcats goaltender Kyle Gover made 31 saves on 34 shots. OU was 1 of 8 on the power play while Weber State was 2 for 6 with the man advantage.
The loss was Oklahoma’s third in its last six games and gives the Sooners a 22-3-0 record on the season. Weber State improves to 6-14-0. The Sooners host Weber State again Saturday afternoon in Oklahoma City.
