I think when I get off of work at 4am I'm going to throw a pot roast in the crock pot to eat when I wake up.

It's been a while since I've made a pot roast. I have potatoes, carrots, onions and a big hunk o'beef. Do I need to add any water or chicken/beef broth in there with the beef and veggies? How much?

TIA

No. I never add water to mine and it is fork tender by the time I wake up. Crock Pot roast is awesome....don't forget to throw in some mushrooms too. Oh, yum!

Don't you need water for the whole roasting process to work properly?

Also make cornbread.

Beef broth.

Lots.

You can always drain the leftovers... into your huge, gaping maw.

Maybe some buttered Texas toast chaser.

Pot roast? First you want to sear the meat all the way around the outside. High heat, no liquid except maybe a TINY bit of oil, and no veggies. Then drop the heat, add water and maybe a beer until the liquid's about halfway up the side of the meat, throw in the veggies, cover, and let it simmer for a long time.

Sounds dry.

No way GHP, raw meat and raw veggies go into the crock pot. Deliciousness comes out. I couldn't remember if I added any liquids or not. I'm thinking half of a beer, maybe.

Every recipe for pot roast I've seen says first you sear the meat on the outside (I'm talking like 4 minutes on high heat, tops. The outside gets brown, the inside stays raw - that's where the flavor for the gravy comes from.) Then you pull the meat out, throw your onions and such in the pot and cook those, then you put the meat and liquid back in the pot and let it go to town for a couple of hours.

Remember, underneath my kitchen are wheels for moving my house down the highway. My cooking utensils are limited to a 10" pan, a 4 qt. sauce pan, a crock pot and a plastic, microwave bacon cooker.

Go with a beer, can of beef/chicken broth (or water and a boullion cube, if you're a true hilbilly). Maybe half or more of a package of onion soup stuff. Any spices you want. You might be bfe, so i dont know if you can get them, but parsnips f'n rock. Split a jalapeno in half (lengthwise) and toss it in.

Ta-da!

Pot roast isn't what you think it is, Dumas.
