The pr0n industry likes it better. (http://www.tgdaily.com/2007/01/11/ces2007_hddvd_blu_ray/)

That was key to VHS's success too.

"but HD DVD is easier to produce, cheaper to produce and there are more HD DVD players in homes than there are Blu-ray players, for example in the Xbox 360."
He lost me there. The Xbox doesn't have built-in HD-DVD capability. You have to buy a $200 add-on (which is a good price IMO). The PS3's have Blu-ray capability built in so I have a feeling that Blu-ray is going to catch up to HD-DVD pretty quickly.

By the way, I wonder how many pr0n movies are shot in HD. 1080P of moneyshot?

Couple of things wrong with this, though I happen to agree that HD DVD has a great shot at winning.

1. The pron industry's effect on the home video market is vastly overstated. I guarantee that the total sales of all DVD-based pron isn't even a significant fraction of Sony Pictures' DVD sales. Not sure why that would be any different for the HD market. Just think about it-how many DVDs does the typical person have, and how many of them are pron?

2. If you're going to count 360s as installed HD DVD users, you have to count PS3s. There's one HELL of a lot more PS3s out there than HD DVD addons to 360s. What those PS3 disc attach rates are is open for debate.

3. Again, pron's impact on the beta/VHS war was overstated. Pron went with VHS pretty much for the same reasons VHS won (and the fact that they were given free VHS tapes to go exclusive), not the other way around.

Now, that being said, I think HD DVD has a great shot of winning this war if they can get some studios that are BD exclusive to defect. If disc sales rates stay where they are, that'll happen sooner rather than later.

However, the BD/HD DVD war could be ended rather decisively if the five BD-exclusive studios wanted to-all they'd have to do is release Star Wars, Toy Story, Monsters, Inc, Casino Royale, and a few others and HD DVD goes away in a puff of smoke. However, the studios aren't doing that for a couple of reasons which both make sense.

In my opinion, to date, HD DVD has done an incredible job. BD is closing the gap rapidly, though, and HD DVD needs to figure out how they're going to maintain their lead. Getting the LOTR movies out as an exclusive would be huge.

Don't forget the Wii equation in the pron industry as well...

Dude, I personally do not need to see some close up of some of those extra nasty porn woman's coochie in 1080p on a big screen, talk about ruining the experience

(not that there's anything wrong with good pron, there's just somethings I don't need to see in true to life detail)

it's not the typical person that drives the pr0n industry. it's the guy who has an entire garage filled to the ceiling with pr0n VHS tapes. And the spare bedroom filled with pr0n DVDs.

I wish I was joking, but I actually know some of these people.

Disney is BD exclusive and is a member of the BDA, the Blu-Ray licensing group. In fact, there's rumors that Disney strongly objected to allowing pron on BDs.

That may be the case, but I sincerely hope that guy is a statistical outlier. I mean, I love the pron, but I keep it to a hard drive full of it.

I thought this was interesting. I really think that the PS3 may be Blu-ray's savior.

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents

And the game industry tracking firm NPD has finally announced the 2006 sales numbers for the next generation video game systems. Nintendo sold 1.1 million Wiis in the U.S. in 2006, while Sony sold 687,300 PS3s. Microsoft, meanwhile, has sold 4.5 million Xbox 360 game systems since their launch in late 2005, and 92,000 HD-DVD add-on drives for the 360

92,000 HD-DVD add-ons for the Xbox vs. 687,300 PS3's with built-in blu-ray capability. Given that the PS3 is the cheapest blu-ray player currently, that's a huge boost to the BRD folks.

Uh, guys, newsflash for you- The future is NO discs.

People act like shooting 1080i is a big deal. I'm buying a Sony HDV for 2k next week. Pron producers will be shooting on that in no time just like they are now on Canon Xl-1s and Pana DVX 100s. All it takes is down-converting for now and releasing later on HD.

So does this mean that I'll eventually have to replace all these regular DVD's I have? That's freaking bulljive!

What about burnage? Is it possible to burn an HD-DVD with a standard DVD-R or do you need a new HD-DVD-R? I'm assuming the latter.

Sometimes I hate technology...

So if the future is no discs, how does one watch it in their home, on the laptop, in the car, etc? You see, after your first sentence, you started speaking gibberish.

In the very near future, people will dl the movies they want to their hard drives via innerweb. If I'm a studio, I would rather charge a one time fee of around 10 bucks for a movie with no costs for packaging etc for someone to grab it from cyberspace. You want that little piece of paper that has the chapter listings- print it yourself. Apple released the apple tv this week which is an interface with televisions to get them caught up with the media centrist pc crowd. Within a few years people will be hooking their computers to their plasmas/whatever via hdmi. You can watch most trailers on the net on hd nowadays.

In other words, I wouldn't rush out just yet.

This is from a person with a bunch of Laser discs.

So how do you get it to the car? I'm assuming there will be a device that they can be downloaded from the pc (similar to Ipod).

Like I said, sometimes I hate technology.

I can watch movies on my ipod in the car via the D lo FM transmitter. I am sure that with all the cars that come equipped with MP3 player inputs (for ipod and the like) that dvd players/screens will eventually have the same. Of course, why would you need HD for a car? How big is the screen in your Yukon, Bruce?

tbl
1/12/2007, 11:46 PM
Ha! I actually don't have one. I just know a lot of people do. My point is that if these HD formats take off, the standard version will eventually be phased to the point that VHS is at now (basically obsolete). If that's the case (and especially if your scenario is the case), then somethings gonna have to give.

Have you seen a really good dvd on your hdtv? Have you seen a video tape on your hdtv? Therein lies the difference. VHS was an analog and clunky format, whereas you can manipulate digital video to fit the circumstance or what you want to play it on.

And another thing...

Itunes and Napster etc have changed the way that people buy music. Why not movies, tv shows, etc. ? It will happen

Media PC's will have to have much higher penetration for that to happen. It's still very much a niche - much like HD discs.

I agree with you... It's just frustrating. Personally I look forward to the day that there will be no more DVD's. I got on board with the 1st generation Ipod and I haven't looked back. To me, CD's are a thing of the past. If we have to do anything, I look forward to the jump to the hard drive format the most. I refuse to buy and HD or BRD player.

To be honest, most dvds look pretty darn good on a plasma, just stick with it and don't buy into the hype.

To be honest, most DVDs look like crap on a plasma when compared side-by-side with an HD DVD or BD.

Seriously, I can barely watch SD DVDs anymore on the big screen. They **** me off.
