Since everyone is discussing playoffs and how championships should be decided..I wondered how many titles teams could actually have if peoples "Opinons" were different...SO...here is a list of the top 10 Teams as far as UNDEFEATED-UNTIED seasons go..

These teams COULD have been declared National Champs in each of the seasons they were unbeaten and untied...

#1 Oklahoma 11
#2 Notre Dame 10
#3 Texas 9
Michigan 9
#5 Alabama 8
#6 Penn State 7
Nebraska 7
#8 Auburn 6
Minnesota 6
Miami of Ohio 6

Ohio State and USC not in the Top 10..nor are the Florida schools:pop:

I'm pretty sure our 2-0 teams in 1896 and 1897 shouldn't be considered as 'possible National Champs'.

yes, but there are times when there are no undefeated teams. I have always sorta gone with the the NC's that are recognized by everyone.

Texas has 4 not 3..

And and far as the 1800's teams, Princeton and Yale won "nATIONAL Titles" with less wins than 2 in certain seasons.

Why are you pentalizing them for their schedule? They beat everyone they played.

Alabama 6?

Am I missing something, or is this just since 2004?

Last time i checked bama had added another NC to its already amazing 818...

EDIT: The Florida win and the signing of Saban puts it up to 914...

I sure could sworn that after last year they were only up to 3... lets go with three.

Texas had a split title in 1970. They had the UPI title. They were ranked #1 going into the Cotton Bowl and lost 24-11 to Notre Dame to finish 10-1. Nebraska that year was 11-0-1 and was the AP champ. UPI's final poll was before the Bowl games. Nebraska was the NC in 1970.

OU had a similar situation in 1950 where we lost the Sugar Bowl but the NC and all the polls were done before the Bowl games then and OU was #1 in all the polls.

I have a hard time recognizing any NC done "retroactively" by outfits like the College Football Researchers Association or Helms and any of the pre-media poll titles (before 1936) don't carry much if any weight in my book. In 1923 for example it lists Illinois and Michigan as co-champs both with 8-0 records.

I think USC's and Alabama's whoring of anying good season as a NC is ridiculous. In 1918 OU was 6-0 and we outscored our opponents (which included KU, Ark and OSU) 278-7. Do we go around claiming a NC for 1918? The Helms group says 4-1 Pittsburgh was a co-national champ. Brilliant! Now 1954 when we finished the season 10-0 with a win streak of 19 games at the time, we should have been NC.

I generally recognize the AP champ post 1936 and might see how there might be a couple legit titles. I'd say AP titles until the BCS and then BCS champs since.

So that means... ND 9 (although at least 1 is bogus in it's own right, 1947)
Bama, tOSU, OU 7
USC 6
Mia, Neb 5
