SOONERS WEEKLY
For the Week of January 9, 2007

NO. 3 SOONERS COMPLETE ROAD SWEEP OF AZ STATE
OU WINS 2 OF 3 AT ASU HOCKEY DESERT CLASSIC
SOONERS HOST WEBER STATE THIS WEEKEND

THIS WEEK’S GAMES - The University of Oklahoma® hockey club (22-2-0) returns to home ice for the first time in 2007 as they host the Weber State University Wildcats (5-14-0) for a pair of games. The Sooners and Wildcats played a pair of games earlier this season in Ogden, Utah. Oklahoma swept both games in that series, winning by scores of 9-3 and 6-0. With those wins, OU’s all-time record against Weber State is now 4-2-2.

LAST WEEK’S OU HOCKEY GAMES – Oklahoma traveled to Phoenix to participate in Arizona State’s 2nd Annual Desert Classic. OU opened play on Thursday against the local Phoenix Polar Bears of the Junior B Western States Hockey League, who thoroughly whipped the Sooners by a score of 9-2. Oklahoma then faced host Arizona State on Friday night and won a thrilling, character-building 5-4 shootout victory over the Sun Devils. OU and ASU squared off against one another again on Sunday afternoon and the Sooners dominated play for much of the game, winning 5-2.

RANKINGS – The Sooners are currently ranked 3rd in the most recent ACHA Coaches Division 1 ranking. The next ACHA D1 ranking is scheduled to be released on Friday, January 19th.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS – After Oklahoma’s 9-3 win over Weber State in October, Weber State’s coach Joe Pfleegor left the WSU Hockey program and was replaced by Zak Treasure, a former WSU player. The Wildcats are in a rebuilding mode this season and have fallen out of the Top 20 for the first time in four years. Weber State is led in scoring by forward Anton Volkov, who has four goals and six assists for a total of 10 points in fourteen games this season. Volkov is followed in scoring by defenseman Devon Benkie (3-6-9), forward Ian Soldano (6-2-8), and defenseman Tristan Schwarz (3-4-7). Goaltender Kyle Gover is WSU’s top netminder with a goals against average of 3.71.

OU HOCKEY’S INTERNATIONAL FORCE – Senior defenseman Danny Force has been added to the 22-player 2007 United States University Select Team roster which will compete at the Winter World University Games, to be held Jan. 17-27, 2007 in Torino, Italy. Force, a 6’0”, 215 lb. broadcasting major from Southlake, Texas has 10 goals and 5 assists in 17 games for the Sooners so far this season. The 2007 U.S. University Select Team will be coached by Chad Cassel, head coach of The University of Illinois hockey club and will play Canada, Slovakia, Russia and Korea in group play in Torino prior to the elimination round of the Winter World University Games. Force will miss the games against Weber State and Iowa State as a result of his selection.

SOONERS HOME GAMES ON THE AIR – All 2006-2007 OU Hockey home games will be broadcast over the internet this season. Caleb Fox, a senior from Rowlett, Texas, returns to call his second season of play-by-play action for the Sooners. Color commentator Keaton Fuchs, a senior from Norman, also returns this season to bring you another year of hard-hitting, fast-paced Sooners Hockey action over the internet throughout the year. The OU Hockey broadcast begins 15 minutes prior to face-off.
