The No. 3-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club completed a season sweep of No. 10 Arizona State by beating the Sun Devils 5-2 in the last game of the ASU Desert Classic Sunday afternoon. Oklahoma’s Luke Rose scored on the power play at 5:28 of the first to put OU up early 1-0. Forward Justin Hall was opportunistic at the 13:15 mark when he gathered up a rebound lying in the crease and banged it home to give the Sooners a 2-0 lead. In the second period, ASU scored just under four minutes into the period to make it a one goal game but Sooners defenseman Trevor Hallberg gave OU a two goal cushion when he ripped a slapshot from the left point over the Sun Devils’ goalie into the ASU net at 8:23 of the period. ASU again got to within one goal when they scored on the power play just over seven minutes into the third period, making the score 3-2. However, just 48 seconds later, Sooners forward Kyle Allan sent a tough angel shot at the ASU net and the puck found its way between the goaltender’s pads and his stick into the net to give OU a 4-2 lead. Sooners D-man Mark Tylka sealed the victory for OU with an insurance goal from the blueline just inside the right goalpost to make yesterday’s final score 5-4 in favor of Oklahoma.
Sooners goalie Aaron Schmeilski stopped 28 of the 30 ASU shots he faced on the evening while his ASU counterpart, Tyler Gallant, made 24 saves on 29 shots. OU was 2 for 7 on the power play while ASU was 1 for 7 with the man advantage.
The win improves OU’s record to 22-2-0 while Arizona State drops to 9-12-0. The Sooners host Weber State this Friday in Oklahoma City.
