With nothing better to do, I took my boys to see We are Marshall this afternoon. I went in expecting a Rudy-type movie, with some decent football included. Nothing more.

I was surprised. First, I don't cry at (or in) movies. So, I didn't cry in this one, but I was as close as I have ever come to crying. This is a great movie. As much as I don't care for Matthew McConaughey, I think this was his best role. The story of the Marshall Football program of 1970/71 is an amazing story, and this movie did a pretty good job of giving you a glimpse of that, without making it too "hollywood" (if that makes sense).

This may rank as the best sports movie I've ever seen. Football usually gets the shaft when Hollywood tries to make it into a movie, it's either moronic (i.e. Waterboy...which was funny, or over-the-top like Any Given Sunday). There have been some good football movies out there (Radio, Friday Night Lights, etc.), but this (to me) is the best.

The only down side is that I left the theatre depressed. Given the option, I would much rather feel good at the end of a movie.

I give it 4 1/2 Mangino chins out of 5.

I think part of the reason I liked it so much is because I didn't expect anything from it. When I get excited about a movie, it usually sucks.
