Just when you thought Gute couldn't be a better person, he pulls this stuff.

Its no wonder this years team kept sucking it up and playing hard nosed, get it done ball. With leaders like Gute, PT, AD, etc. its hard to imagine a team with more high caliber individuals on it than this one.

I am more impressed with Gute than just about anyone I can think of right now.

By Kenny Mossman on soonersports.com.

Jason Matheson, our director of internet services, relayed to me a story this week that merits a lot of attention in this space.

Shortly after the Fiesta Bowl loss, Matheson was among the OU personnel and players that were exiting the playing field through an opening surrounded mostly by Boise State fans.

You can imagine the taunting.

Taunting is one part of sports that will forever elude me. It’s not enough for us to simply win. No, the victory must be sweetened by also heaping shame on the opponent. Sure, we can exalt our own team, but by all means let’s make sure we twist the knife in the other. Let’s trash talk.

There is a vilification in sports that is unhealthy. Just because someone wears a different color jersey does not somehow mean they are any less a human being. Heck, we all know that. Seriously, we do.

Even the most ardent of shame-heapers would, in a solitary moment like this, agree with all of the wholesome aspects of competition and shun the negative actions of those caught up in emotion and revelry.

But I digress.

As the OU team left field, one moron in particular (and let’s be clear, every school has a moron fan or two; this is no indictment of Boise State) was apparently laying it on pretty thick. Among the Sooner players in the line of fire was running back Jacob Gutierrez, a young man long known for his classy behavior and concern for others.

In the heat of the moment, Gutierrez could have been forgiven for reacting outside the bounds of his normal decorum. Few would have blamed him for shaking his fist or offering a one-finger salute.

And to be sure, “Gute” did raise his arm ... to shake the hand of the fan that was pouring down ridicule.

“This one guy was yelling at us every time we went through the tunnel and he was there at the end of the game too,” Gutierrez recounted. “I just went over and shook his hand and congratulated him.

“(Boise State) played a great game and I wanted to show him what Oklahoma was all about. He was pretty quiet after that.”

But that’s not the end of the story. Other Boise State fans witnessed Gutierrez’s gesture and began reaching down to slap hands and pat backs, the hands and backs of an opposing team.

One person and one simple gesture lit the fuse on combustible sportsmanship and brought a small group of people back to the center of human decency.

That’s typical of Jacob Gutierrez. How cool would it be, whether on the playing field or the freeway, if it became typical of all of us?

(shamelessly stolen from another board, but stuff this good needs to be spoken about more often)

Congrats to the team on a very good year. BOOMER SOONER!

This does not surprise me a bit about Gute, he is a class guy. And I am proud to be a fan of the team he is a part of.

I was hoping for a better ending, like Gute beating the **** out of the BSU fan.

Oh well, nice story.

I read that Carl Pendleton is giving up his football career (last year of eligability) to accept some type of academic assistance (~ $20K). His academic prowess is well known, but apparently the bigger carrot was that it gave him greater financial capacity to care for a younger cousin who lives with him. Apparently the cousin was born to a crack head aunt, but adopted by Carl's parents early in life. When they recently divorced, it was decided to put him under Carl's care rather than one or the other parent. Imagine giving up the final year of something you had worked for your entire life (after that work had landed you at a program like OU) to help a sibling. What unbelievable character.

If Sportsmanship were cool, Gute would be Miles Davis.

There's not much more I can add, but Gute is an example of what I'd like to see out of every Sooner: hard-working, classy, plays/works with desire...

Great post.

Great post & story. Does Bob Stoops deserve some credit for OU having this type of man on the team? For the overall character and guts of the team?
I think so, and that's good to remember whenever we have gripes about play calling or a particular game or some other relatively transient matter.

Gute may be short in stature, but he's a giant among men.

No doubt, but I think it is actually his younger brother...feel free to correct me if im wrong but im pretty sure its his Bro! Either way, OU football under Bob Stoops has been nothing but class, and those that wondered away from that are now gone:D

The kids at Cleveland Elementary who have Gute as their mentor made a great choice. And I bet that when the parents hear about this story, it won't surprise them one bit.

God bless Jacob's heart. It's a big 'um.

or rushes for 9 yards on 11 carries.

Yep, but you have to admit that it's nice to see the other side of Sooner fans as exemplified in this thread.

I would like to echo the sentiments of everyone else who has posted in this thread.

Gute sounds like a great mentor for those children, and a great role model for his fellow teammates.

From what I've read, he was born as Carl's cousin, but Carl's parents adopted him, so he is now Carl's brother.

great story! its good to see not only Gute being a better man but also to see the other Boise State fans being incluenced by Gute's actions and stepping up and congratulate the Sooners on a good game. good to know that the teammate leadership will remain STRONG even when PT and possibly AD leave.
