I got an external hard drive for Christmas and was wondering if anyone knows a way to assign it a permanent/dedicated drive letter. As it is, my computer gives it the first available drive letter each time I plug it in. It'd be very handy if I could assign it one constant and permanent drive letter.

There is a way to do it, but I don't remember exactly how.

I realize that this is not as helpful as it should be.

It's kind of a half-assed way of doing it. You assign your optical storage units to be a certain range of letters and that keeps them from being assigned to where you want your external drive to be assigned when you plug it in.

use Linux

use Linux

I already told you, I can't figure out how to install a damned thing except Linux itself. The whole needing this file before you can install that file and the .rpm/.tar.gz thing just blows my mind.

My God man I'm not a computer engineer.

With the drive plugged up

Go to control panel - admin tools - computer management

Select Disk Management, right click on the drive in the panel (likely disk 1)
and change the drive letter to whatever you want, and it should keep that letter.

OR

Format the drive, and when you do, assign it a drive letter.

Settings->Control Panel ->Administrative Tools->Computer Management

When the window for Computer Management opens, click on "storage."

In the larger window, double-click on "Disk Management (local)." It will list all your connected disks and their drive letters.

Select (single-click) the disk you want, select the "Action" drop-down menu, and choose "All Tasks" and "Change Drive Letter and Paths" from the fly-out menu.

Pick the drive letter you want. Every time you connect that disk in future, it should be assigned the drive letter you assigned it.

um, just don't unplug it

Well, that's not a bad suggestion but it may make transporting a generator along to class with me and my laptop somewhat difficult.

It'll keep the drive letter.

IF there is a conflict with another drive letter, your portable drive won't show up. Then you'll have to change it to another letter.

Right-click My Computer > Manage.

And then do everything else Slick said. :D

Well, yeah, but my explanation was more complicated and therefore more scholarly. Damn you, Grapevine.
