Seriously, the names being lobbed around here deviate so much from what my definition of white trash is. I mean, the Beatles, Patsy Cline, SINATRA, the Stones? Not to mention names like Beckham, Arafat and others, people I might not be a fan of, but sure don't fit that definition. Heck, Arafat and Cheech aren't even white.

The definition above, IMO, narrows it down to Americans (although you could read that as meaning it is USED by Americans), and "white" makes it pretty obvious it's limited to caucasians, but really, I think the accepted usage is towards people who insist on being low-class and hillbilly-fied despite their surroundings. People who revel in being white trash. So people like Britney and K-fed fit without question, people like Reba not so much.

I'm not a huge fan of country music, but just being associated with it certainly doesn't qualify somebody. Being FROM the country doesn't automatically qualify somebody. If they try to make more of themselves and work to become more sophisticated as they achieve success, they don't count.

Merry Christmas, all! In retrospect, I totally agree not all of the names I threw in deserve such a label. Anyone who climbs out of a poor background deserves props. Maybe the category needs to be better defined as white persons who have money but also have class behavior consistent with their roots. I threw in lots of names of people with poor backgrounds but who may or may not have low class behavior.

Arafat and Cheech Marin are white, just different shades - Middle Easterners are caucasian, and hispanics can be classified by census as white or black. Cheech is white, from what I can tell. Arafat just looks low class. He was actually a college-educated engineer by background.

Reba does not belong. She is country, but is very bright and from what I understand, a sophisticated woman. Ashley Judd does not fit either. Her roots are poor Kentuckian, but she is a sophisticated, even somewhat haughty adult. Wynonna fits, though.

Elvis, Brittney Spears, John Daly, Jeremy Shockey, Barry Switzer, Anna Nicole Smith and others clearly fit the definition above - poor roots combined with low class behavior even after having money. I would argue Frank Sinatra fits the definition, despite his talent and image, because he has poor NY inner city roots, and lived a life paling around with mobsters, threatening casino blackjack dealers, sort of a rough, borderline wiseguy himself even after he attained money and fame. I am a huge Patsy Cline fan, but she lived it up and partied hard like Miss USA after she became famous. I would omit the Beatles because they rose from Liverpool working class roots but lived more sophisticated lives - charity, peace movement, religion, etc. after they became famous, - with the exception of Paul's estranged wife, that is.

I don't usually associate genius and white-trash, but your point is well taken. I do believe Fmr.Pres. Clinton is quite bright, and he's indubitably WT.

OK, I stand corrected: Sinatra grew up in a middle class NJ home. He just exhibited low class behavior after he entered the entertainment/night club/mobster/casino lifestyle as an adult. Since his roots were middle class, he would not fit the WT category.

Cheech Marin is white - hispanic-white, by census classification, unless he has African ancestry.
