Does anyone in the SO brew their own beer with a home brewery kit? If so, whats the best thing to look for in a kit?

my father in law gets all his stuff from beernut.com, and he has a mail order catalog from "midwest homebrewing and winemaking supplies"

but if you do want to get into it:

2) find a local brew shop

No joke. I spent time at JK's suggested website and it looks like brain surgery. Natty Lite it is:D

Mongo, you should probably stick to microscopes and rocks. Barley and hops will just confuse you.

I agree with you 100%. You should stick to gay pr0n as an investment, since you know the market demands

It looks complex as hell, but it still would be cool to get twisted on your own make. I seriously read that site, and I am no smarter than when I started.

maybe I should invest in moonshine or hydroponics. Where is Vet when you need him?

A friend of mine, his parents made pear wine. They gave us bottles of it all the time, it was pretty dang good, but they let it ferment wayyy too long

northernbrewer.com

Actually, I didn't think the instructions look all THAT complicated. northern brewer also sells some shortcut ingredients that will let you skip a few of the messier steps if you want. Most of the expense is in the initial setup and equipment. I think it becomes a lot more affordable if you brew frequently.

Yep. I haven't brewed in a while since I'm rarely at home any more. Any of the kits are fine, but make sure you get a big stainless steel brew pot, a glass carboy, & copper wort chiller. I made my wort chiller from 3/8" copper tubing from Lowe's.

Call me tomorrow & I'll tell you more.
