Easiest way is to go get Fedora, which is basically the "community" version of it.

http://fedora.redhat.com

Or, if you want a re-done version of RHEL, try White Box Linux.

Heh...my bro is a Redhat instructor/developer

Yeah RH isn't free anymore. If you want updates you have to pay for it and register on the RHN. Just get Fedora.

what do you want it for?

the new Enterprise versions won't update without you buying service

if you want the free version, it's called Fedora now, like Vaevictis (heh, and Instigator) said, the torrents are pretty cool to get it

I've just want to try it out with some weather software (weather-display), the guy ported it to linux (which beats windows), so I wanna load a machine up.

So there's no functional difference in fedora and redhat?

Centos is also a very good distro, built out of RH source.

Fedora is more cutting edge. I think Centos is closer to RH, actually.

They are basically the same. If you just want a Linux Distro, Ubuntu is my favorite right now. I run it on my primary machine at home. It is Debian based though so you have to convert RPMs though.

Fedora has more of the new stuff in it, they test stuff out in Fedora for a while before they put it in RHEL because it needs to be more stable

A plethora of knowledge, right here in the SO. :D

which to me is ridiculous. And it ain't cheap (almost a thousand bucks per server for us)

i don't care, it's not like i pay for it :D

i hear that it's going to use Yum in RHEL 5, so you can probably get packages from other places, and get questionable stuff like video codecs or mp3 support, etc..

Vaevictis

Also, Fedora has a much faster dev cycle, and compared to RHEL anyway, releases become unsupported faster.

oh I know, it's just that..once you purchase an OS, you know, you oughtta be able to get updates for free. It feels like a ripoff.

We only have a few RHEL 3.5 srvrs right now but once we move teh oracles to linux we'll be a decent-sized linux shoppe

So, what did you end up using? Did you get the DVD iso or multiple CD's? Dedicated machine? Dual boot? Virtual machine?

I generally like linux but i have yet to figure out how to download and simply install a piece of software.

It takes a computer engineering degree just to load up a program.

It takes something other than a liberal arts degree just to load up a program.

Fixed. :D

It takes someone who is willing to RTFM just to load up a program.

Fixed.

For you laypersons out there, that be "read the ****ing manual."

In this case, "the manual" being the many fine HOWTO documents, the many man pages, the many info pages, and possibly if you're really in deep, The Camel Book, or K&R C.

I got the DVD, it's a dedicated machine. Haven't loaded it yet.

or up2date/yum/apt-get

assuming there is a package pre-built

if not you are going to have to kinda know what you are doing

**4. wonder what in the hell you're supposed to do about a failed assertion in the compiler itself
**5. dig through MM5 source code
**6. remember why you hate Fortran 77
**7. determine that they were using a non-standard extension not supported by the SunOS f77 compiler
**8. ponder how you can possibly be the first person to ever try to use MM5 with that compiler
**9. come up with a fix and send it off to Boulder

You're dealing with Fortran?

In that case, I think you should move "Weep uncontrollably" straight to #1.

Fortran is the name of the game in meterology. Fortran 90+ can actually be pleasant to work with.
