Lions assistant suspended for driving arrests

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (Dec. 19, 2006) -- Detroit Lions assistant coach Joe Cullen was suspended by the NFL for his team's game against the Chicago Bears for two arrests -- one for drunken driving and one for nude driving. He also was fined $20,000 in addition to the one-week suspension.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell cited the defensive line coach for conduct detrimental to the league, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said.

The Lions suspended Cullen from the season opener against Seattle. But Cullen met with Goodell on Dec. 1 in New York and the commissioner decided a one-game suspension wasn't enough.

Cullen was pulled over Aug. 24 in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn and ticketed on suspicion of indecent and obscene conduct after police said he was driving nude. The Lions said alcohol was involved.

On Sept. 1, police stopped his vehicle and determined he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.12 percent, according to court records. The legal limit for drivers in Michigan is 0.08 percent.

The misdemeanor cases have been adjourned until Jan. 11 to allow Cullen to complete counseling.

That just reminds me of the back-up post player for the Timberwolves who got in a wreck earlier this year because he was.... how do I put this delicately.... busy at the six o'clock position of the steering wheel...

He was on his way to the Viking's boat party and then onto Duke for a Lacrosse match.

Driving nude at 0.12--that's like 3-5 beers. I don't drive nude unless I've had at least 12. ;)

Yeah, I was thinking about that at first, but was revisited by the league, hence a new cycle...After he did it last summer, I thought he would have been fired, no. No wonder the Lions are so bad...

I don't understand this. It's like cold in Michigan this time of year. I don't even take a crap nude in the winter.

it's not cold in september, you know...when it happened. :)

The Lions are so bad because Bill Ford suffers from the non alcoholic version of Bill Wirtz disease. People keep coming to the games, so he's still making money. There's an effort in motion now to get fans to walk out of Ford Field during the Bears game about halfway through the second quarter and leave the stands empty except for a few diehards, and Bear fans.

I don't think I could begin to explain how out of touch William Clay Ford is with the 'average' person.

The NFL in regards to the assistant coach hasn't done anything the Lions didn't do as damage control back when the story broke. If Goddell wanted to make his mark, he'd be working on the recent issues now, not 4 month old matters.

Was there someone in the car with him, or was he going at it solo?

Eddie Griffin. Who ironically got his court date two weeks ago.

(WCCO) Minneapolis Minnesota Timberwolves player Eddie Griffin pleaded guilty to a petty misdemeanor for inattentive driving for a bizarre March 30 crash that attracted national attention.

The 24-year-old Griffin paid a fine and court fees totaling $375, said Mary Ellen Heng, an assistant city attorney. A misdemeanor charge for driving without a license was dropped after Griffin produced a valid Texas license and proof of insurance.

Heng said Griffin entered the plea through his attorney and did not appear in court. In exchange, the Minneapolis prosecutor agreed to drop another charge when he produced a Texas driver's license and proof of insurance.

The I-TEAM report showed surveillance tape of Griffin's Cadillac Escalade truck smashing into an SUV parked in front of Santana Foods grocery store on University Avenue in southeast Minneapolis. Store owner Abed Hassuneh said Griffin was drunk and told him he had been watching pornography on his dashboard DVD player.

"The guy was drunk and he was performing sex to himself inside the car," Hassuneh said. In the surveillance tape, Griffin can be heard saying "It's like I am drunk, I'm drunk" and seen struggling for several minutes to put on his sweatshirt.

When Minneapolis police arrived on the scene, they did not test Griffin for alcohol or arrest him for DWI. Instead the officers, Daniel Anderson and Matthew Lindquist, gave him a ride to his home and the much less serious traffic tag.

Since the I-TEAM report last June, Officer Anderson has himself been arrested for an off-duty DWI incident in Columbia Heights, Minn. He has been on paid leave while the Minneapolis Police Internal Affairs Unit reviews the incident. They are also reviewing how he and his partner handled Griffin's case.

Griffin still faces a civil lawsuit for the crash from the driver of the vehicle he hit.

Griffin is averaging just 2.0 points and 2.3 rebounds a game this season and has played a total of seven minutes in the last three games for the Timberwolves.

Once thought of as an important piece in a thin Wolves frontcourt, Griffin has seen his playing time dwindle as a result of the surprising emergence of second-round draft pick Craig Smith.
