2006-07 ACHA Division 1 Ranking #6

West Bloomfield, MI - The University of Illinois accumulated 31 of a possible 37 first-place votes, and will take the #1 ranking into the year 2007. Penn State received 5 first-place votes and moved up to the #2 spot. Oklahoma received the other first-place vote, but its perfect season was derailed by in-state arch-rival Central Oklahoma as it dropped to the #3 position. That loss to UCO sucks! How come we were the only undefeated team, but still only ranked 2nd?

Not trying to be a downer, this is an actual question with no sarcasm implied. This is not the NCAA D-1 is it?

Nope, NCAA D-1 = True varsity sport, complete with schollys and the like.
ACHA D-1 = top tier club sport. The players pay their own way.

"arch-rival"?!? Great Googly Moogly, they're the El Paso Buzzards of the ACHA!!!

The rankings are based on a poll of ACHA D-1 coaches. All they've got to base their rankings on are the weekly list of scores, previous years' experience, and word of mouth from other coaches. There are no tv highlights and came recaps.

Basically, we could go the whole year undefeated and as long as Illinois or maybe Penn State keep their losses in the 3-5 range we'd have trouble passing them simply because most D-1 coaches haven't seen enough of OU.

The good news is that this isn't the BCS. #1 doesn't mean squat. I'm fine with OU being where they are, because it's the tournament that crowns a champ. The Sooners have already defeated some of the top teams out there, and I'd just as soon see them coast under the radar as much as possible until the tournament (see: 2000 football team).

The problem with the rankings is the disparity within the voting pool. There's a Midwest/Northeast voting block that just doesn't see enough of OU to give them a vote.

The boys just need to keep moving forward, play their game, and focus/prepare themselves for Nationals.
