56' Oklahoma is dominating the plains states from the Mississippi to the Rockies, but '61 'Bama is still way ahead.

I voted for Oklahoma, but it sure is tough to make an argument against a USC team that game up 13 points in 10 games. That's impressive, even in a run based offense of those days.

I like the OU shutout of Notre Dame in '56 though. That's pretty impressive as well.

'71 Oklahoma vs '88 Notre Dame
'74 Oklahoma vs '61 Bama
'55 Oklahoma vs '56 Oklahoma (WTF? That's not fair)
'00 Oklahoma vs '05 Texas

By the way, in case you haven't seen this, SI did a story on the greatest dynasties of the 20th century and Oklahoma was one of only two college football teams to make the list. Oklahoma is listed at #10 with the Domers at #2. Agh! I hate Notre Dame. Even with a losing record in bowl games (eight consecutive, nine after this year) they'll always be God's gift to college football. What's more impressive than a 47 game winning streak?!

I'd say the 2005 Texas team was better than the 2000 OU team, but most people considered that Texas team a great team going into the season. OU barely made the top 25 in August. So it kind of means more.

Like this year. After the Texas game, if anyone told me OU would be 11-2, Big Twelve Champs, and going to a BCS bowl, after losing Adrian Peterson the game AFTER the Texas game, I'd check them for drugs. That's why this season is more special to me than any other season.

Perhaps '05 Texas is the 'better' team out of those two, but supposedly so was '00 K-State, and '00 Nebraska, and '00 FSU. All I'm saying is that despite the athletic advantages of '05 Texas, the 2000 Sooners were better coached, better tested, and were built around more of a team concept. VY would have been relatively contained by Rocky, Torrence, and Roy.

Put the pipe down....2000 OU defense would have killed VY are the whorns...Remember that we beat VY 2 other times with what I believe was a less violent defense than the one we sported in 2k.

The 05 whorns had a cakewalk conference. Yes, some of that is OUr fault.

Think back to the tx-buckeyes game in '05 at Columbus, when Tressel gave the game to tx by not playing Troy Smith all the time.(every time Tressel put him in, tOSU moved the ball, but didn't without him)

OU played great defense in the mid to late 80s, when GG was DC.

They did the same thing with '44 and '45 Army. Must be a bias against teams that dominated everybody they played for two straight (more in OU's case during the streak) years. Fokkers.

If you look at the "Weaknesses" for '00 OU they mention kicking. Shows you just how little research they put into these things. Our kicking game was excellent in '00.

I would say OUr '00 passing game was as prolific as '05 USC's was and you saw what they did to '05 UT.

The main difference would be that the '00 defense was WAY better than USC's, so I say we kill the whorns.

Um, that one may not be fair, but 5 of the 8 teams listed are OU teams. I'd say that's about right. :D

I think the 1973 OU defense was one of the greatest college defenses I have ever seen. I also think that is one of the best college football teams of all time. Only a 7-7 tie at USC where the Sooners basically kicked a great USC team all over the field yet managed only a tie is the one reason it isn't remembered in that way.

Thread jack alert!

I started thinking about the best OU teams that I (personally) had seen, and it came down to 2 teams that had disappointing end of the season losses.

1.* You can't deny 2000. This was a great TEAM & caught many off guard until late in the season. I will always love this team, and deservedly so.

The teams that I saw that were DOMINANT were the 2003 & 2004 squads.

#2. 2004 - OU-452 : Opponents-219 (points scored) - that team had 2 shutouts, and held 2 teams to 3 points. - 1 bad loss . . . ugh.

#1. 2003. I will never know what happened to these guys. That kstate game & lsu game were bitter pills to swallow. I know that much of it hinged on J. White being hurt in the Big XII title game, but this team was OUTSTANDING & should've gone undefeated - at the very least - should've beaten lsu. That k-state game looked like we ran into a buzzsaw. Bad tackling & an incredible defensive scheme against us was enough to confuse our guys beyond comprehension. These stats to me are staggering:

OU- 601 points scored
Opponents- 214 points scored

7 games they scored 50+ points!

Maybe it's my own myopia, but I think that 2003 team was the best I'd ever seen.

I would have to say that my top three would be

'92 Bama
'00 Sooners
'01 Canes

For best Sooner teams that I have seen, I have in no particular order- 00, 86, 03, 78, 85, 87, 75.

That 78 team deserved to play for the title of it weren't for Billy's fumble.

I think that they had something like 9 fumbles - 7 lost - they only lost to nebbish something like 14-17? Ugh!

The 61 Bama Defense was awfully good. In the Orange Bowl against OU they had a middle linebacker named Lee Roy Jordan. He is also in the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor. In that game, and Bama fans may correct my memory based numbers, he had 29 tackles; 19 unassisted tackles. He was an animal in that game, but throughout the season he was a part of a defense that was equally compelling. Still, the 74 OU Defense would be my vote getter.

I agree. '74 OU was a great D. It's interesting to see the regional biases in this poll.

It wasn't the greatest defense of all time, but anyone else remember this game: http://www.soonerstats.com/fb/games/boxscore.cfm?GameID=949

Only one first down. And if I recall correctly, the one first down was due to a penalty (roughing the kicker).

I'm no tOSU fan but their 05 D had to be the most talented group of players I've ever seen on one unit. I think there were 7-8 players drafted. It was a shame the O didn't help enough.

That was a very long day for Oklahoma Aggie fans. The 77-0 game with A&M made for a very long day for Texas Aggie fans.

Perhaps we should call every team we play "Aggies" if that'll help us kick butt.

I haven't read any of this thread, just wanted to congratulate Duke on using the proper word dominant. It seems 9 out of 10 internet message board posters would have used dominate.
