Any on here? I took the MSF Basic Rider course this past weekend and will get my license in the next week or so and start shopping for a motorcycle. What are some good sources for reviews and reliability ratings?

What? I thought my drivers license allowed me to ride a motorcycle, if I were so inclined.

At least 10 years maybe longer. I know when i switched from a Commercail license to CDL is when they had me switch.

if you've never ridden before you might want to start at a 650 cruiser.

honda is always a good choice. they make a 650 shadow that is pretty sweet.

I bought my first Harley in August. I bought the '07 VRSCDX Night Rod Special. Beautiful and quick.

WATCH OUT FOT THE IDIOTS ON THE ROAD....THEY SEEM TO THINK MOTORCYCLES CAN STOP ON A DIME....NOT TRUE!

I could have gotten Grandfathered in on my motorcycle lic. but I didn't do it.

If I ever decide to buy another one, I'll have to go through the course.

I guess I better do it before they revoke my drivers lic. for being to old and dangerous...lol

The bf has one, which means I ride with him. Has a Yamaha R1. That thing is a beast. The speedometer majiggy (and yes, that is a technical term... ;))stops at 195, and apparently, his bike keeps getting faster after that.

As for anything else, I have no idea. He says he is going to teach me to ride and how to fix it, but he wont let me on that. Not that I am terribly worried about it....

wow you would think he could make the 45 min ride pretty easy

Unfortunately for him, the bike is in need of some repair. Clutch is going out. And its too cold, or some BS. Apparently, I am not as important as staying warm. (He didn't buy that line... BUT, I wasn't being that convincing...)

And yep... from experiences, he can make a trip that usually takes 25 minutes going 70 in a car in about 8 minutes on his bike. :D

I've been fighting the urge to get one. everyone else at work has one, and I need a new hobby, but I would seriously kill myself (and yes, I've ridden bikes before, I know how, I just also know I'm too twitchy.)

This is actually very good advice. A 650 is a bike that, even if you want to upgrade to something bigger, faster, meaner in the future you might hang onto because it's a great around-town bike, loaner bike, and the size will let you keep up with most everybody. I'd also buy a used bike first just because of the exponentially higher likelihood that you could tip it or dump it in the first few weeks of riding. Depending on your situation, you might wanna check out insurance prices first too. They really differentiate between big and bigger engine sizes, sport bikes vs. cruisers, etc.

That said, I've had dirt bikes most of my life, street bikes from 500 to 1400cc and the best all around bike I had was a 1981 or '82 Yamaha Virago 920. Damn thing was so versatile and would keep up with any bike I had before or since. I've ridden the sport bikes some and they are a blast. So responsive and quick but I just don't feel all that comfortable on 'em. Ridin' a 2004 Suzuki Intruder VS1400 now. I like it alot but could easily trade it for a V-Star or something a little more comfortable. For being so big it's a bit of a dog too.

You've started off smart by taking the riding course. Test-riding bikes is great fun and you can learn a lot about the bike unless you have full blown motorcycle fever. Then it's like neverending foreplay. Lots of free advice here worth just that. Bottom line is that a bike isn't a huge investment and you can always sell, trade, or change your mind. Selling motorcycles has to be a great job. Listen to questions all day and the damn things sell themselves.

For the love of Pete, man wear a helmet.

I am not a fan of the 650. They are a little buzzy at highway speeds. That being said, if you get a larger bike you must realize that at some point you (or someone) is going to mash the throttle. All I can say is put a two or three thousand miles on the cycle, before you go all star boy. I have an 800 suzuki.

I don't trust the other ******** in this world enough to get a motorcycle. But that's just me

I have a suzuki 1400 Intruder, but I dont ride it anymore.
Got too bummed out by all the biker accidents that seem to happen here in Florida. Bike week at Daytona is always good for 3-6 life enders. But when you put a couple hundred thousand bikers partying for 7 days in Daytona.... well, crap happens.

If you do the bike thing, you may think it's cool to ride without a helmet. And, yep it is, until you take a spill. Then you'll wish you wern't so cool.

Florida repealed it's helmet law about 5 years ago at the urging of some 15,000 bike riders by petition. Amazingly, the first person on the petition, one of the starters of the no helmet drive, turned out to be the first person killed on a bike after the new law went into effect. Sad, but true. It is said, she probably would have survived..............if she had worn a helmet.

I had a motorcycle license when I was 15. Somehow, some
way, it "fell off" my license years ago, which didn't matter since a DL allowed you to ride a motorcycle at that time. I didn't find out about the new law until 2 years ago. At that time, I tried to get it put back on my DL through my uncles, who are cops. They said it couldn't be done. I REFUSE TO TAKE THE TEST AGAIN! Especially when those who never took the motorcycle test got "grandfathered in".
If the state was worth a crap, it'd be in their computers somewhere that I passed the test a long time ago.

I was going to get something a little less powerful and not spend as much as I did, but I've always wanted a Harley, so that's what I got. Now if I could get a leather jacket with a calculator and crossbones on the back that said "Hell's Accountants", then I would be set. Thanks for the input in this thread.
