OKLAHOMA 5, CENTRAL OKLAHOMA 0

The No. 2-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club bounced back from its first loss of the season in a big way by shutting out Central Oklahoma 5-0 Saturday night in Oklahoma City. There was no scoring in the first period and both teams seemed very tentative with the puck. In the second period, the Sooners poured on the pressure and forward Doug Gebbie got OU on the scoreboard first with a goal just 3:44 into the period. Justin Hall added a power play tally and Michael Gray scored a few minutes later to give OU a 3-0 lead before Central Oklahoma changed goalies in an effort to stem the Sooners’ offensive tide. Fourteen second after Gray’s goal, a line brawl erupted when a Central Oklahoma player tried to run Sooners goaltender Aaron Schmeilski. Four players were ejected from the game, two from each squad, as a result of the melee. If the brawl was designed to cool down the Sooners’ offense, it didn’t work as OU forward Kevin Kennedy kept the scoring going for OU with a goal just 1:34 from the second intermission to give OU a commanding 4-0 lead. In the third period, both teams kept their cool but OU kept up the pressure, throwing a total of 27 shots at Central Oklahoma’s net in the period, including team captain Phil Ritter’s goal at 8:38 which sealed the game for OU at 5-0.

Schmeilski was outstanding in net tonight for the Sooners, stopping all 16 of the shots he faced tonight to earn his third shutout of the season. Bronchos starting goalie Justin Sgro stopped 19 of 22 shots he faced before being yanked in the second period in favor of Rob Mattison, who stopped 33 of 35 shots during the remainder of the game. OU was 1 for 7 on the power play while Central Oklahoma was 0 for 4 with the man advantage.

Oklahoma has now completed the fall portion of its 06-07 schedule and finds itself with a 20-1-0 so far this season. Central Oklahoma drops to 9-7-0-2. The Sooners are off until January 4th when they travel to Tempe to participate in the Desert Classic tournament.

I'm curious about why Craig McAlister left OU to coach UCO. The Broncos were obviously a good team and the crowd at our place was definately more fun with a big group of opposing fans. And that brawl on the ice was incredible! I smell a rivalry.
