View Full Version : Crazy flight costs!!!

My uncle is a CEO of a large insurance company in Phoenix. Anyways, he calls me up and has 2 free tickets to the Fiesta bowl 40 yard line!!! He offers them to me and I gladly accept. Now, my dilemma is these flights are out of control. My uncle said it normally is $400 for 2 people to fly from PHX to OKC.

My luck the flights are starting out at a $1,000 RT!!

My plan is now to try and catch a red hot deal from OKC to Vegas (around $100 with taxes) Then Vegas to Phoenix which is currently $375 for two people RT Bringing our grand total to $575 which beats $1,000. Hopefully, it works out like that, if I miss this game because of stingy airlines I'm going to be upset. Any thoughts???

Rent a car and drive it.

It ain't dat bad.

Spanish Sooner

that really sucks. free 40 yard line tickets is amazing. My suggestion is perhaps taking a look at the cost of driving to the game instead of flying. Though the convience of flying to driving is greater, it might be cheaper, though I hae no idea what gas prices are in New Mexico or Arizona, so maybe it wont be. Just a thought, but the OKC to Vegas, Vegas to PHX option seems better then direct from OKC to PHX

My buddy and I are thinking about going, but the cost of flights are killing our back pockets. We've tried every scenario in the book. Flying Southwest from DAL to San Diego, El Paso, LAX, LAS. Or Austin or Houston to PHX.. everything is $$$$$

I fly to OKC/Phoenix a lot the normal round trip is about $250.00...I paid over $500.00 per person for my group for the Fiesta Bowl...

Go to Vegas, have a good time.

Rent a car, drive to the game, have a good time. It's about 280 miles to Glendale from Vegas. 5 hours in the car or so.

Go back to Vegas, have more good times.

Go home.

If nothing else, Greyhound takes about 24 hours each way and is around $300 for a round trip.

I just found a round trip on there for $513 between OKC and Phoenix

I travel almost every week and many of the best fares are not from the locations you would think. Try this, go to cheaptickets.com. I find that they have some of the best fares. Try looking to fly out of either Ft. Smith or Northwest Arkansas (XNA). Both of those have decent fares and are not a bad drive if you are in OKC or Tulsa. Both are better than flying into Vegas and driving to Phoenix. Also, try DFW or love field if you are in southern OK.
Just a couple of thoughts.

Doged
12/10/2006, 01:37 AM
I'm finding US Airways, Frontier and America West out of DFW all listing less than $400 for a round trip.

It's a supply and demand thing, for one given flight there can be a up to a dozen or so different fare codes. Meaning on the same flight, one guy might have paid $75, another guy $200 and they guy who bought the last seat might have paid $500.

Even though 14-day advance usually gets you a better price, if the flights are almost sold out you are going to be paying more.

US Airways & America West are now the same airline, so you should be able to mix & match those flight times.

Still a few OKC / PHX on 12/30 and 12/31, returning on 1/2 or 1/3 for $286 one way on southwest.com. Those are some of our highest fares because the flights are close to sold out, but your total will be about $590 per person - much better than $1,000.

Remember, Southwest fares are only available on southwest.com.

Took the greyhound route once ('96) from OKC to Ft Huachuca (Sierra Vista) Took about 21 hours.
Also Drove from Mustang to Sierra Vista, took about 13 hours. (doing 5-10 MPH over the speedlimit.

Good luck either way.

Try priceline.com. They give the prices and then you bid on a seat. I don't travel alot but I use priceline everytime and get the trip for about half price. The only drawback is that you have to accept the flight times they give you. Not a big deal for me. For the Nebraska game in KC, I got RT Air from Pensacola with 3 days rental car for around $300.

tues/wed outbound with a tues/wed return normally yields you the cheapest flights overall. most other days, business travelers kill the seating capacity and you lose the cheap seats. your other option is southwest which is normally fairly cheap all the time.

BoonesFarmSooner
12/10/2006, 04:27 PM
Southwest is WAY expensive right now. I think a R/T ticket for the dates I got mine for were running around $600 on southwest. I've got a ton of frequent flier miles and couldn't even use them the week in between Christmas and New Years...

Yeah, it completely shocked me. What I normally would pay for a round-trip ticket, they were asking that for one-way!

Our gas in Austin away from I-35 is near $2.20, so that seems reasonable even for interstate gas.

We had thought about it but aren't going to make the bowl games (Insight for my Tech wife) but we had looked at driving as well. I hate flying anymore unless time is a major issue (like Austin to Boston this year), I much prefer to drive if it is around a day because you are going to waste that much time in airports anyway.

I didn't make myself clear. Albuquerque is around $2.15. From Amarillo to Albq you will be paying around $2.35-$2.45. Fill up in Amarillo and again in Albq.

From Norman to Albq is about 8-8 1/2 hours. From Albq to Phoenix is about 5. DO NOT exceed the speed limit across the Texas Panhandle by more than a couple of miles per hour. You can drive 80-85 all the way across New Mexico.
