Was there a rule in place in the 1950's that precluded a team from going to a bowl game in consecutive years? Was wondering why OU did not play in the '57 OB game after an undefeated season...

Yep. Every other year is the way I heard it. Might try googling though.

1956 Sooners could not go because the Big 7 had a rule no team could go back to back....or ever other year was the rule ----So the best team in the nation sat home while Colorado got to go to the orange bowl...remember there only were these bowls back then....
Orange
Sugar
Cotton
Rose
Tangerene
and few minor others

I was really Pi$$ed Not to see the 56 Sooners in a bowl...even though We Won the NC that year.....

Although it seems my input isn't needed, true, it was a conference rule. It happened to OU several times with the Orange Bowl, from what I remember.

I guess the liberal mentality was alive and well even in the 50's: punish success, dumb down entrance requirements, welfare/reward the undeserving, affirmative action insted of achievement. Just a preview of the "Great Society" legislation of the 60's.

Your Input ALWAYS Welcome....

I remember in late 56 their were Some Boosters (maybe even The University President) trying to get a January 1957 game with Hawaii that year -Just to reward the team --- But Some body put a nix to it ...NCAA ...??

Who knows But it didn't happen...... :(

No I don;t think that was the Deal -- The Big 7 just wanted to spread the $$$ Around -- Because they knew Oklahoma would go every Year..... :)
