I mentioned this in the street re-naming thread, but I thought this one deserved its own.

Today nominations for the 49th annual Grammy Awards were announced. The Flaming Lips were nominated for three Grammys, including Best Alternative Music Album (http://www.grammy.com/GRAMMY_Awards/49th_Show/list.aspx#05), Best Rock Instrumental Performance (http://www.grammy.com/GRAMMY_Awards/49th_Show/list.aspx#04), and Best Production, Non-classical (http://www.grammy.com/GRAMMY_Awards/49th_Show/list.aspx#27).

They're up against Gnarls Barkley, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Thom Yorke in the alternative album category, so that one's a longshot. But they ought to have a good chance at the engineering award and the instrumental award, which they've won once before. Either way, it's cool as ****. Congratulations, fellas.

One of these days I'll probably hear one of their songs somewhere.

Shocking that BRJ's 9k post would be in a Lips thread.

i'd like to see an award for the 30 minute version of Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn Interstellar Overdrive they used to play in the late 80's with the smoke machines and lights--that was sublimity. the yeah yeah yeah's are pretty average but tame enough to get some bigtime "cred". Thom Yorke will win.

i've got a bike you can ride it if you like
it's got a basket a bell and rings
and things to make it look good

I don't know, I disagree about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I was already putting Show Your Bones in my top five for 2006, and maybe above At War With the Mystics...

i'd rather listen to Talking Heads 77 and more songs about buildings and food than the yeah yeah yeah's.

hear what i'm saying?
