View Full Version : Dear Texas, You Blew It

Dear Texas,

At the beginning of this decade, you were projected to be the dominant program in the BigXII.

But for years, you endured the annual asswhippings in Dallas. Shut-outs, shoot-outs, blowouts...you lost every way imaginable.

http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/5976/6ny3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

It seemed as if Stoops so thoroughly pwned the rivalry that Mack's tenure could be cut short. You grew tired of playing in San Diego while watching OU win conference titles and play for BCS trophies and national championships.

Then suddenly, you caught a break. Vince matured and convinced the staff he needed more control. VY became the unquestioned leader of your program.

OU lost an amazing group of seniors and you finally reversed the RRS trend. Vince even brought home a national championship for the first time in generations.

After a series a bad breaks for OU and another win Dallas, it seemed you'd finally shaken off the "soft" label. It seemed you'd win back-to-back conference crowns and finally start being the consistent, dominant program in the Big XII that you were projected to be.

Two embarrassing losses, another Big XII trophy in the Switzer Center, and an invitation to the Alamo Bowl later....and you're back.

You had a chance to prove your '05 campaign was more than just Vince...a chance to separate yourself from OU's recent dominance...a chance to reclaim this decade.

But you left the door open and OU kicked it down.

http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/9598/champs06re2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Instead of closing the deal, you’re back to being soft…and you’re relegated to watching your nemesis in another BCS bowl while you’re again forced to think of what might have been.

You blew it.

Yeah... the difference is: I'm not calling Texas soft. And turnovers, last I checked, were part of the game...

Plus it was 36-10 @ Austin compared to 28-10 @ Dallas.... 8 point difference and neutral vs. road... Not saying OSU was "as close" to beating Texas as OU, but it's not like it was that much different in the end...

Actually, I like it when both teams are strong, ranked well and the tension & expectations are high on both sides of the Red River.

But frankly, I don't spend much time thinking about 'horns. It's they who are obsessed with us all the time. Ah, well. It's a burden we were born to carry well, this Sooner Greatness. *sighing indulgently*

Yup. Turnovers part of the game.

If you re-read the post, he wasn't saying Texas was soft at the time it beat OU....he's saying it went back to being soft after the OU game, i.e. it choked in the last two games and lost its nice 2 game lead in the South race. Texas was definitely soft in the aggy game (I didn't watch all of the KSU game, so I can't speak to that game).

I'm not calling Texas soft.

Not sure why you're concerned with this topic so much but...

Behind a vaunted, veteran OL and a highly touted RB corps, they only had 4 games in which they rushed for over 200 yards (and not exactly against world-beaters either).

-North Texas
-Rice
-Iowa St.
-Texas Tech

In spite of their finesse play, all they had to do was win one of their last two games and couldn't.

That's being mentally and physically soft.

I understand, Smell Fear, I know a bunch of 'em too. But I'll tell you what I taught my boys: If you have to talk constantly about being better, chances are, you're just wishing you were. Good breeding just is, it isn't something you can grab by flapping your gums about having it. Our occasional references to "whorns" or "Texass" is so unlike yapping incessantly about "dirt burglars" "BlowU" "Trailer U" "Faggys" "WE are THE university" "F OU" "F Stoops" "Terra Kleptics" "Aggylike" ad nauseum.

I have no problem giving credit where is has been earned. Let Texas be...Texas. We'll be Oklahoma. Texas was awesome. Last year. They were pretty good this year. We won the Big 12. Again. Next year, we'll start the race again. Our seasons are not defined by a win over UT or OSU. I don't think the others can say that and be honest. The simple fact that OU football outshines Texas football over decades and seven NCs is quite acceptable in my book.

The Terry Miller/aggie victory occurred my Sr. year at OU. That was a tough year for the Sooners. Our defensive backfield had lost 3 of its 4 starters to injuries before the aggie game. We lost Sidney Brown, Jerry Anderson, and Scott Hill. Brown and Anderson were lost for the season and Hill came back later that year. The odds were stacked against us. In true OU fashion we pulled it together and ended up winning a share of the conference title and finishing 5th in the final AP poll. Ahead of Aggies, Buffaloes, longhorns and everyone else we played. It kind of reminds me of this year.

Definite congratulations should go to Oklahoma this year for overcoming obstacles and adversity and by improving its play every week after the Texas game. Stoops did a very good job, perhaps, his best ever, in molding this team into a winner.

Gracious in victory and magnanimous in defeat seems to be a bit lacking from the initial post in this thread... especially with the results of the last two RRS being what they were.

Nonetheless, represent the Big XII well in the Fiesta Bowl.

As far as not being gracious...in the last year and a half, it seemed all our mojo had gone South....and our fanbase and staff heard about it (at great length) from all corners.

In what's been a virtual 2-man race in a 12-man field for some time, this Big XII title was enormous for our program....and it's the first time in a little while we've been able to stick it back to everyone.

The question one has to ask themselves is how much of a factor the O-line has to play in how good or bad a qb is.
Was Colt really good this year or did he just have a heck of a line in front of him to protect him? A line that gave him time to go through progressions and open up the running game to take even more pressure off of the passing game.
Was Paul that much better this year than last year or did he have a better line in front than last year when he was running for his life (along with another unnamed qb:rolleyes: )?
You see if you buy into the O-line making a qb look good or not, the question you whorn fans have to wonder is, can Colt perform without that all-star front line protecting him (I'll be surprised if three of those guys aren't playing on Sunday next year). OU on the other hand will be able to give OUr new qb the seasoned line that Colt enjoyed this year.

The refs blew the call(s) at Oregon in unprecedented fashion (for a crew with access to replay). That has been hashed and rehashed by more people than I can count (most of them non-Sooner fans). Even your puke orange delusional self has to admit that.

I can fully admit (as I did immediately following the game) that my team blew the game. Couldn't stop the last two TD drives, and couldn't capitalize on great field position to make an easy FG with (arguably) the best kicker in the NCAA.

I can also fully admit that Paul Thompson made some huge mistakes in the RRS that cost us (to go along with superhuman efforts from Aaron Ross and Colt McCoy). I can admit that AD made some huge mistakes that resulted in a costly turnover and a whorn TD.

Don't get all huffy with me, Luthor. I'm not the one that blew a missed opportunity for a Big XII championship in 2001.

We absolutely, positively whiffed on not 1 but 2 chances to walk into the CCG. The KSU loss was entirely on the back of our D for giving up 45 frigg'n points to the same team who couldn't wait to get donkey stomped the very next week by feckless KU.

My huffiness is not directed at you. I'm still torqued out of shape over our seniors laying down in Manhattan.
