Mine is measuring accurately under .025" to the thousanth using a feeler gauge as my known object to measure. It also measures 1.56 correcty and 4.6 correctly, again, using things which I know the diameter of. The question is, is it still possible to be off by a few thousanths when measuring an object at 2.53 (between the lengths which I know it is correctly reading)? I know anything is possible, but this sure doesn't seem likely. BTW- this is not digital.

I don't know about dail, but I know about dial calipers...;)

could be an error in the scale markings, or could be operator error in reading the scale. You would think that if you are bracketing the dimension and those are correct, then the remaining dimensions would be correct. I would check the scale to see if it is accurate.

Fixed, thanks.

Assuming that you're using and reading them right, the only way that the calipers could be wrong is if the scale is non-linear. That seems fairly unlikely, unless the device is an abosolute POS.

So either the number you're getting is correct, or there's user error.

I ordered something that had to be precise, specifically .253"

It's measuring .251" on my Caliper.

I'm going to send it to a friend and have him double check before shipping it back to the people I bought it from.

2 inches is 2 inches anyway you measure it!

What is it? It's not a sear is it?

I'm going to guess a weapon of some kind.

No, not a sear.

It's a locking shoulder for setting headspace in a FAL rifle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FN_SLR)

These ones I mess with aren't even cut for a sear. I wish they were, but the legal registered ones go for close to $20,000. In English, that means when you pull the trigger, rock-and-roll music starts coming out the muzzle.

I'm building this for my brother- for his Birthday

check your head-space and timing!!!!

if you specified .253 that shoul be the corrct measurement .
Take it to a Machine shop to be sure
I use a dial caliper all the time in the shop , but just for comparison

check your head-space and timing!!!!

Timing was done by inserting a rod in the front sight hole (threaded) and another rod above the receiver near the rear of the rifle. Both of them stick up verticle about a foot, and are supposed to be very straight. We torqued the barrel until they both "looked" perfectly aligned with each other.

We're gonna headspace this thing to where it will eat just about any .308 commercial or 7.62 NATO military ammo.

I'd find someone who has to have their stuff calibrated and get them to measure it for you.

If its measuring correctly at 2 known points and zero's out correctly, calipers should be good.

I just bought this caliper for reloading and it's driving me crazy not knowing if it's accurate or not.

There are 2 things I want to learn how to do in 07

1) Make my own bullets
2) brew my own beer

That means I was sold one with the incorrect measurements. That irks me, but at least it's not the tool. Thanks.

I'd get that, too, if I could afford it.

If Hillary wins in 08 and dems keep congress, those things are going bye-bye. They'll grandfather in the ones already owned like they always have.

The libs claim that you can shoot down a 747 at cruise altitude with one. They're dangerous, and will be banned for the children.

Right now, I'm assuming I've got 2 years to buy everything I want.

Jerk,

You mentioned an important point. Your calipers may not be calibrated and that may through your reading off a bit. Would .002 make a big difference? I'm not a gun ******-*******...
