So Boeing-Spectrolab, with the help of DoE funds has achieved the 40% efficiency landmark for solar cells through, which according to the press release could lead to energy production at a cost of 8-10 cents per kilowatt-hour.
This is pretty big. Most commercial solar cells have an 8-16% efficiency. Some more advanced ones which are mainly used by NASA on satellites have efficiencies as high as 30%, but until now 40% has never been reached.
