Actor Rip Torn Arrested in New York City Suburb on DWI Charge

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. — Rip Torn (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:siteSearch%28%27Rip%20Torn%27%29;), who was acquitted of drunken-driving charges two years ago in New York City, was arrested again Monday in a city suburb after a collision, state police said.

No one was hurt in the crash in North Salem, Trooper Edward Gillespie (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:siteSearch%28%27Trooper%20Edward%20Gillespie% 27%29;) said. The 75-year-old character actor refused a sobriety test and would be arraigned on a charge of driving while intoxicated, Gillespie said.

Torn's publicist, Dick Guttman (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:siteSearch%28%27Dick%20Guttman%27%29;), said from Los Angeles that he had not heard from Torn and could not comment.

Torn, a Texas native, has movie, television and stage credits dating to 1956. He has been in such recent movies as "Marie Antoinette" and "Dodgeball" and had big hits with the "Men in Black" movies. He won an Emmy Award in 1996 for playing the hard-drinking producer on TV's "The Larry Sanders Show."

In 2004, Torn was acquitted when jurors said the prosecution failed to prove that he was drinking before his fender-bender with a taxi. A police videotape showed Torn cursing and berating officers before turning down a sobriety test, but his lawyer said that was due to anger, not drinking.

When he was acquitted, he shook the hands of the male jurors, kissed the hands of the female jurors and said, "I love New York."

Amazingly, nobody looks dashing in a DWI photo.

I think the police actually have hair stylists to make them look like they just woke up. See Nick Nolte for another example.
