View Full Version : My Daughter's BF Asked If He Could Have Permission To Marry Her

VeeJay

Sunday night he popped the question - to me. If he could have permission to ask her to marry him.

I didn't know young 'uns did that any more.

Things are moving rather rapidly at present.

We're you cleaning the Remington 870 as this was happening? The air should have been full of the aroma of Hoppe's #9

My FIL offered me $1000 to elope with his daughter!

VeeJay

He's been dropping hints to Mrs. VJ so I sort of expected it.

Daughter is 20 - he is 23.

I've never really envisioned myself in the role of a father in law. I need time to slow down, or back up a little bit.

Asking for a daughter's hand in marriage is classy, but it doesn't really take stones. What would really impress me is if a guy asked if it's OK to boff your daughter. THAT would take stones.

And I'm yet again happy I only have sons...

A friend of mine flew from FW to Corpus to ask his girlfriend's dad if it was OK. The jackass said no that he wasn't good enough to marry his daughter. My buddy waited a few months and popped the question to his girlfriend. Her dad was mad because my friend didn't get his permission first.

After the wedding the assclown told my buddy that he was sorry for treating him like crap all the years that he dated his daughter but now that he was a part of the family the dad liked him.

20 may be too young for many, but it's not for others.

My mom was 19, my dad 22 when they got married, and they're getting ready to mark 53 years on 12/26. Of course, there's a lot of difference between 1953 and 2006. But I can't say "No, you're too young."

If I tried to get in their way, she'd find a way to make it happen - and I'd end up with a good kid for a son-in-law who wouldn't have anything to do with me. I was actually flattered he did ask me - it showed a measure of respect for me as the parent. And my 20 year old has only lived with us for 2 1/2 years. I didn't raise her in the traditional sense, and her mom apparently hasn't been included in this.

My daughter's mom hasn't been very pleasant about things since my daughter came to live with us. And this is not a "I'm the preferred parent" thing, but I am pleased my daughter and her beau think enough of me as a parent to include me.

I asked my FIL, though if he'd said "no" it wouldn't have changed anything. It was more a sign of respect than an actual question. Plus, my wife had been married once before, so I think his shock was long gone.

I regret not asking my father-in-law. We'd been dating for almost five years, so it was a forgone conclusion to everyone, but if I had it to do again, I'd make the gesture.

My wife was 18 and I was 20.

I don't know if I would recommend it at that age for very many people. A few are ready. They should wait on kids for a few years though.

We waited 3 years for the first kid.

I heard if you get married too young that later you get rejected a lot. Is that true?

As long as wives continue to be female, the possibility of rejection can happen at any moment.

Not only did he ask my biological father, he asked my adopted father, my mom and my grandparents before popping the big question.

I wanted him to think about it long and hard before he decided to ask to make sure he was really certain.

Did the words "triple" or "dog" enter into the conversation? Because if they did, that's pretty awesome.

I would never think about asking a girl to marry me without asking her father's permission. I'd let her know that I was going to ask for permission, though.

Then I'd completely disregard whatever the old fart said.
