The No. 2-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club used a four-goal third period to put away an upset bid from ACHA D2 power Missouri State, winning the game 6-2 on Friday night. Sooners forward Luke Rose got the Sooners off to a quick start with a goal just 42 seconds into the game. However, the Ice Bears rebounded and played OU tough throughout the remainder of the period to keep the score 1-0 in OU’s favor after twenty minutes of action. In the second, MSU tied the game but defenseman Mark Tylka gave the Sooners a 2-1 lead with a goal at the 9:47 mark. Missouri State tied the game once again and the second period ended with the score tied at 2. The Sooners must have received some “inspiration” from their coaches during the second intermission as they came out flying in the third period, keeping the puck in the MSU zone and pelting the Ice Bears’ goalie with the puck at every opportunity. The hard work paid off when defenseman Robert Hetrick score just under five minutes into the period to give OU a 3-2 lead. Oklahoma forward Owen Brewer scored through the MSU’s goalie’s five-hole with under seven minutes to go in the game and forward Wil Petty added a power play tally at 14:59 to give the Sooners a three goal cushion. OU defenseman Greg Curtiss scored with just over four minutes remaining in the game to make the score 6-2 in OU’s favor and the Sooners rode the game clock out thereafter to secure the win.
Sooners goaltender Aaron Schmeilski stopped 14 of MSU’s 16 shots while his counterpart, Missouri State’s Michael Brown, stopped 34 of the 40 OU shots he faced on the evening. Oklahoma was 1 of 4 on the power play while Missouri State was 0 for 5 with the man advantage.
Oklahoma is now 18-0-0 on the season and remains the only undefeated team in ACHA D1 play. Missouri State falls to 9-9-1. The Sooners host Missouri State again Saturday night at 8:30 P.M.
