A company in L.A. is offering "free furniture" to anyone if ucla beats usc this weekend.

A few stipulations:

1. You must purchase said furniture this weekend - BEFORE the game.

2. You must spend at least $2000.00

3. All sales are final -

The company - H.D. Buttercup is advertising this on the local radio stations here in L.A. - I guess that they will "give you your money back" if UCLA pulls the upset.

I seem to remember a company doing the same thing back east somewhere this same year - and the "underdog" won - they lost something like $300,000.00.

Does anyone know if it was the same company?

Think the owner will put a little $$ on the moneyline on UCLA to hedge the risk a little?

Didn't some guy in Chicago do this regarding a Bears game?

This would never fly in Ohio, free furniture would just be kindling to all the Bucknut fans.

I think that it was a Packers game.

Yeah, I think that was it. He had to actually pony up to the offer, didn't he (and gave away around 20 gr in merchandise)?

You can buy insurance for stuff like that, so the furniture store will only be out the cost of the policy if UCLA wins.

If the Bears shut out the Packers, he would give anyone their furniture free (up to $10,000). He gave away around $300,000 in free furniture.

If he sells the furniture at retail prices with no markdown then he's really just making a pretty good bet. He doubles his margins over the 3 day period if USC beats UCLA and he doesn't have to face the Vegas line to make his bet. I'm sure the markup on this furniture from wholesale to retail is very high. Also if he makes applicable to cash only purchases then there are two benefits - (1) his margin on cash is higher and (2) he minimizes his downside while attracting more credit sales (from customers disappointed they didn't read it right but still wanting the furniture). This can't be all that bad a promotion really.

One of the big furniture stores did that in Houston, same type deal if Houston beat the Cowboys.

Man I would love to see you get rid of some free furniture. USC, you're going down!

If it was the Jaguars instead of the Cowboys that would be worth the eight-hour drive. :D

There was a company here in Tulsa with a similar offer if OU could shut Texas out a few years back. I think 2003 scared them out of it, though. Good thing for them, I guess.

Doubt he lost much since you had to buy the furniture BEFORE the game, and i doubt very many people had that kind of confidence to plunk down 2K:pop:

Yeah, but it would have been nice if you just happened to need some new furniture at the time and you were going to buy some anyways.

like mdklatt and caphorns said 1) they could buy an insurance policy the same way dealerships do when they sponsor the free car for a hole-in-one during golf tourneys. 2) My granddad owned a furniture store forever and he has told me that if they won't come off their price 40% they just really don't want to sell it when it comes to furniture.

Just to give you guys an update - I heard an interview on the radio last night with the owner of the furniture store that ran this promotion over the weekend.

He still hasn't seen all of the people that "won" refunds on their furniture purchases, but he stated that it was in the "several hundred thousand dollar" range.

The radio guys asked if he took out insurance. He assured everyone that he didn't. He said that this kinda bothered him, and that his stance was one of risk and reward, and that he felt that whatever happened, it would be for the best - he apparently has been getting tons of press over it as well. (I'm sure it was possible that he could've done this, but he was pretty adamant about it)

He also mentioned that one of the larger purchases was in the $10K range, and that he had a couple of people that were piissed off because they finished their order 2 minutes after kick-off, and he couldn't honor the refund for them.

Interesting story.
