Source: Texas QB Snead to transfer

By CHIP BROWN / The Dallas Morning News

AUSTIN – Texas freshman quarterback Jevan Snead has asked for a release from his scholarship in order to transfer, a source close to Snead said Wednesday.

Snead's availability for Texas' bowl game could be in question because Snead wants to enroll at a new school in January, the source said.

That would leave Texas with starter Colt McCoy and walk-on third-string QB Matt McCoy, who has never attempted a pass in a college game. The only other scholarship quarterback on the team is Sherrod Harris of Arlington Bowie, who is redshirting.

The source said TCU was a leading candidate to land Snead, a Parade All-American from Stephenville, although the source said Snead would like to take visits to other schools once he is released from his scholarship.

Snead completed 26 of 49 passes (53.1 percent) for 371 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions in backup duty this season. Snead will have to sit out a year after transferring, but because he played this season, he can use his transfer year as a redshirt season and still have three years of eligibility left.

Snead lost the battle for starting quarterback to Colt McCoy, who was getting consideration for Heisman Trophy votes before suffering a stinger in the first quarter of a loss at Kansas State.

Colt McCoy set a school record for TD passes in a season with 27 and has throw seven interceptions.

Snead initially committed to Florida but changed to Texas after top high school recruit Tim Tebow committed to Florida.

In the US Army game last January, he performed REALLY well. I think he'll be a good pickup for just about anyone.

I'd guess he's a bit miffed that he didn't get to play the aTm game.

Fixed.

Thats not good....
It's good for the Whorns actually.
They may land Brantley and Chiles after all.
Redshirt Sherrod Harris is no slouch at QB either, that dude is fast as hell.

Whats funny though, if Snead goes to SFA...is, we could see a SNEAD vs. BOMAR in the Battle of the Piney Woods in the Southland Conference when we all expected to see that in the Red River Shootout of the Big 12 Conference.

Saw him play at Stephenville, he's pretty good man, and I dont blame him for wanting to go somewhere else, good luck to him.
Rumors in Dallas are TCU, they could use him, kind of home town thing, might not be a bad fit.

besides the transferring in conference rules (losing 2 years of eligibility), we were just talking about this crap on the recruiting forum. seriously, these guys rarely pan out. now, if he went juco and proved himself as a stud QB and got re-recruited then yeah, we should be interested.

As a fresh why wouldn't you go JUCO and get re-recruited rather than go to some second rate school?

I don't see the sooner bench exactly over flowing with QB candidates right now. It wouldn't surprise me if Stoops has his cell phone number.

why would you run the risk of not performing when you can find a coach who will promise you every chance to be the starting QB?

Colt McCoy was getting Heisman consideration!?!?

He should have gone to a 2nd tier D-I school...like Kansas, Miis State, UCLA, South Carolina right out od high school. Competition is to heavy at a school like TX. Go somewhere where you will be REALLY appreciated and rule the roost for 3-4 years. His fate was essentially sealed before the 1st game, when then chose McCoy as the starter. Unless he is a die hard orange blood(which he obviously isn't, since he's transfering) he should have gone to a school that isn't going to have 1-2 national blue chippers come in every year to compete for the job.

These two sentences must be versed several times while recruiting kids like Nichol and Brantley.

This morning the DMN is not only confirming that Snead is transferring, they report that two linemen are jumping ship as well.

I wonder what's going on down there?

Snead has been released by the Longhorns and will not make the trip for their bowl game. He will start in January at a school yet to be mentioned.
