Yes, I believe they can. If OU loses the CCG the Gator could take the Sooners leaving the Cotton with the next pick. An OU loss means Nebraska is in the Fiesta so I guess the Cotton would then have to choose the 'horns or the Aggies. If OU beats Nebraska, the Cotton might want the Huskers.

Cotton bowl still holds a little bit of substance, I would rather see them play in a bowl in mid December, those early bowl games are crap, more of a slap in the face than the cotton bowl.....

AUSTIN – Defending national champion Texas, which had designs on the BCS all season, will now play in either the Gator Bowl or Alamo Bowl, according to sources close to the situation.

After back-to-back losses to Kansas State and Texas A&M to end the season, the Longhorns' bowl plans appear to rest with the West Virginia Mountaineers.
Colleges

College bowl schedule

If West Virginia loses to Rutgers on Saturday, Texas (9-3) is Gator Bowl-bound, the sources said. If West Virginia beats Rutgers, the Gator probably will take the Mountaineers.

Under that scenario, Texas would fall into the Alamo Bowl against Iowa (6-6) because the AT&T Cotton Bowl is planning to take the Big 12 title-game loser – Oklahoma or Nebraska – and the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl wants Texas A&M, sources said. The Aggies (9-3) would play California (8-3).

The Gator Bowl is in the position of controlling the fate of most of the down-ballot bowls with Big 12 tie-ins because of its unique deal with the conference. In a span of four years, starting this year, it must take a Big 12 team twice. In the other two years, it must take a Big East team or Notre Dame.

Gator officials are desperately trying to come up with a matchup that will attract buzz because the game is seeking a title sponsor and needs TV ratings.

Texas could deliver that, but West Virginia is expected to deliver more fans. Gator officials have all but settled on Clemson (8-4) as its Atlantic Coast Conference tie-in because Tigers fans are expected to buy up tickets despite the fact that Clemson lost three of its last four games.

If Texas goes to the Alamo Bowl, Texas Tech (7-5) would become a leading candidate for the Sun Bowl against Oregon State.

Missouri (8-4) appears slotted for the Insight Bowl against Minnesota (6-6), and Kansas State (7-5) could be headed to the Independence Bowl against a 6-6 Alabama team looking for a coach.

If the Gator passes on West Virginia, the Mountaineers could end up in the Texas Bowl on Dec. 28 at Reliant Stadium in Houston against Oklahoma State (6-6).

Just don't lose to nebbish on Saturday. We've handed you the opportunity to back into the CCG so don't give it back. We obviously wouldn't know what to do with it.

well, this year they have 3 pretty hot teams

and it looks like 2 of them could be playing in pretty crappy bowls

All those 6-6 teams getting bowl games make me want to puke. There needs to be way fewer bowl games, but that won't happen.

why is the Holiday so primed to get Texas A&M?

I would hate to go to the Alamo. I hate that bowl game

Because they don't want Texas again. They want new blood, and a Cal/A&M game would be a good matchup.

Nebraska would be kinda cool in the Cotton Bowl... i'd imagine they've never played there

EDIT: ok, just not recently

They only been 3 times, and not since 1979.

Man, they are only 22-21 in bowls, compared to OU's 24-14-1

yermom

they hadn't missed a bowl game until 04, it was something like 40 years

they hadn't had a non-winning season in about as long until they lost the 02 Independence Bowl and went 7-7

colleyvillesooner
11/29/2006, 03:42 PM
Yep they missed in 1968 and then again in 2004. 36 years. not too bad.

Odd fact - From 1983 to 1993, they went 2-9 in Bowls, including seven in a row.

All of the bowl games are fine with, it gives me football to watch which is better than most of the crap on TV now is not worth watching.

i'd like an explanation of your term of "backing in", please. i think you're using it wrong.

Oh how great a feeling to go to the Big XII championship game. Oh and I think he mean't "back into".

Miko
11/29/2006, 04:53 PM
Yeah, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he meant, " you have the opportunity to be back in championship game again..."
in a Latka/Fez/English-as-a-Second-Language way.

too many bowls...119 teams in div 1...64 of them are in bowl games...not such a great accomplishment...any 6-6 team should not be allowed in...go to a bowl game and possibly finish with a losing record....thats weak

btw I would love an Arkansas-Texas Cotton Bowl matchup...I think the horns should be forced to hear 3 1/2 hours of that wretched hog call

It used to be such an honor to get a bowl bid. Now it is just an insult if you get none.

My buddy and I are thinking of finding nine more guys so we can get a bid.
