Why exactly do coaches have police escorts on the field?

Bear Bryant started years ago

The reason why well I have no idea other than for security issues but its not like there aren't police everywhere.

or could be there to go protect the goalposts like they did after the nebraska game in 2000 spray the fans with pepper spray

not to split hairs here but I think that guy was an OKC or Norman police officer. He wasn't a Highway Patrolman. Not the guy in the newspaper anyway.

The HP used to do the bed checks for the Sooners during the Gibbs/Blake/Whatshisnuts era.

with all the nuts in the world, I think it's easy to see why they have them.

fyi, the HP also get interviewed by Coach Stoops or his designee to see if they will be a good fit. it also was a non-paying volunteer extra duty for the troopers until the last few years.

Our troopers travel with the team out of state right?

So, Stoops' and Gundy's escorts are OKHP even if they're playing out of state?

The officer with the pepper spray in the south end zone was with the Moore PD. I know for sure because I was standing in Row 23 watching and the wind carried it all the way to our seats.

Yes. I'm not sure if the Norman PD goes out of state too but Joe's Army is there too.

I remember seeing either OUPD, OHP, or both at out-of-state games. I think one reason they use OHP is because they are state police providing security for the public, state-funded university. While not out-of-state, they've had OUPD stationed around that Pride at Stoolwater.

At Alabama in 2003, the 'Bama HP gave the Pride a high-speed escort through all the highway traffic from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa. I remember the bus driver saying, "That's the fastest speed I've ever driven this thing."

In my opinion, OHP > OUPD > Boy Scout Troop 306 > Norman PD

In Bootlegger's Boy, Switzer talks about asking some big burly OHP officer to be his personal bodyguard, because he had gotten death threats, IIRC. YMMV.

Where do the Sooner Rent-A-Cops fit into that sequence?

They don't. I absolutly hate them.A really nice Waco police officer cleared about a 7 foot path for the Sooners to be able to leave the locker room to get to the bus. He was very polite and simply asked people to make a path, which they were happy to do. There were about 60 or so parents with their children who were children waiting to see their favorite players come out. I was standing with our little grandson. One of the OU security guards came along and actually yelled "Get back" and pushed several children back to make an even bigger bigger path. One of the mothers pushed him back. I made a mental note of his name at the time, but I have forgotten it now. I would know it if I heard it. He was real hard looking.

Waco PD isn't rude per se they're simply highly highly incompetent.
Now, the Baylor PD (BDPS) are freaking *******s on some kind of ego trip.

There was one BDPS officer a few years ago who honest to God looked like that one guy from Reno 911. Someone had pranked called my parents claimingto be Baylor PD and told them I was dead, so I happen to go out that night and see this Baylor cop on the corner of a campus street with sunglasses on (it was dark) and his hands on his hips "scanning the area" (there was nobody around). I asked him if they called my parents and he tells me no, but never makes eye contact just continues to "scan" with his hands on his hips.

This type of crap happens more than people think with those ThunderHawk Security people. I've seen a more qualified, inteligent, honest group of people huddled around a burning trash barrel and sleeping under a bridge than I've seen in uniform for Thunder Hawk.

They're arrogant *******s and they think they have some authority other than contacting the police. I loathe them.
