Found a cool test to determine if you are tone deaf or not.
I scored a 58% so according to them I would not be able to carry a tune.

The problem with this test is that it plays "melodies" that are generally contrary to what we are used to hearing in Western Music. Using melodies that are more in line with the tunes that we have grown up with would yield significantly different results.

This is nothing more than one of those old Simon games; if you can remember the bips and blops you'll be pretty good at it. The test to check for tone-deafness in a musical context like this should be if you can discern between slight differences in a more linear melody. Most of the musicians I know wouldn't score too well on the test given. Even the best singers would miss the majority of those phrases 90% of the time.

Just drei groschen from a guy that has made a living as a musician...

Hell, I teach music, and I scored a 80.6%.

Prrriiide is right... this test isn't very well put together to analyze whether or not you can carry a tune given the music that we're used to hearing. A lot of those examples were atonal or very very chromatic, and some of the synth sounds used barely let you hear the pitch over the effects being used. It also didn't progress logically. A better way to do it would've been to start with the easy examples (the major scale, etc) and work up in difficulty from there.

I know if this were a true tone test I would have done much better. This was more of a short term memory test. Due to the indiscretions of my youth, I didn't do too hot.

Heh. I think the other day I scored a 72.2% and bitched about all of the racket in my office affecting my score (there was A LOT). So I take it today, at home, very quiet environment, wearing headphones. What do I score? You guessed it: 72.2%.

Well, I used to have perfect pitch and great hi-freq. reception. Then, I went into the tank business for a few years.
90mm and 105mm guns, plus incoming stuff, sorta messes with yew, hearing-wise.
Still, I can appreciate a good bagpiper with the best of 'em.
