sweet...
After looking at that I think whatever team we face in a bowl game will have a terrific defense.
Clemson - 5
LSU -1

If you just go by conference stats our total D would be #3.

I read yesterday that if you look at our stats since Oregon, our defense is #1. But from where we came from, #10 is an amazing improvement.

Yep, never would have guessed that after witnessing the track meet in eugene.

Kinda makes all those "We miss Mike!!" and "BV can't get it done" posts and threads from awhile back look wrong

I'm very pleased with where we are defensively. However, I can't ignore the fact that we came out so poorly at the beginning of the season. Our coaches have done a great job during the season but what on earth were they doing during pre-season practice?

Seeing what players do in practice is altogether different from seeing what they do at crunch time.

This change has largely come because of Reggie Smith's cover abilities at the safety position. Given the way that Marcus Walker and Lendy Holes are playing at CB, am I the only one who thinks Reggie will stay at Safety next year as well? Orignially it was said that his move to S was a short term fix until next season.

Take away the Oregon game where our defense forgot we had a game scheduled that day and we would be #1 in defense

I've heard the theory offered several times (and I happen to subscribe to it as well) that our defense was hurt in training camp by a lack of full-speed contact. With AD's well-publicized penchant for injury and basically having one quarterback, we basically played two-hand touch for the first month of the season. Yeah, there were alignment issues as well, but it was sloppy tackling that took a 5- or 10- yard blown assignment and would turn it into a 50-yard touchdown.

Stoops said we'd be a top 10 defense at the beginning of the year . . . and here we are. Very impressive. Will be very strong next year. I believe that John Williams and Alonzo Dotson will fill in nicely at the ends . . . although it'll be tough to replace Ah You. What a stud.
Demarrio Pleasant and Ryan Reynolds will fill in for Latimer and Ruuu. Although we'll need to find a play-maker to fill in for Ruuu. I think Reynolds will play well.
Here's an early, early prediction that Jeremy Beal steps up for some serious PT in the coming year. I think he'll get into the DE rotation, maybe the LB rotation as well.

Don't forget about the JUCO ILB, Mike Reed. The guy looks like he could be an instant impact and a monster. He didn't hesitate to commit to OU and is thrilled to be a Sooner. He'll def see some playing time next season. I'm really not concerned at all with our defense the next two years.
