OKLAHOMA 5, MICHIGAN STATE 1

The No. 3-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club stayed unbeaten Saturday night with a 5-1 win over ACHA D2 powerhouse Michigan State. Sooners forward Michael Gray poked home a power play rebound shot just a minute and thirty-three seconds into the game to give OU an early 1-0 lead. Keith Denton scored another power play goal for OU at 6:38 of the first to give the Sooners a two-goal cushion. With just over three minutes to go in the period, MSU scored their first goal of the weekend to make it a 2-1 game. OU responded with less than a minute to go in the period when defenseman Greg Curtiss ripped a nifty pass to forward Wil Petty who was streaking to the net and Petty promptly put the puck into the Spartans’ net to give OU a 3-1 lead. The second period was a scoreless affair due to solid defense as each team took 14 shots on net. In the third period, Denton scored his second goal of the game with 2:51 to put OU up 4-1. Kevin Kennedy added an empty net goal to make tonight’s final 5-1.

Sooners goaltender Aaron Schmeilski fended off 34 of MSU’s 35 shots while his counterpart, Michigan State’s Justin Sand, stopped 32 of the 36 OU shots he faced on the evening. Oklahoma was 2 of 10 on the power play while Michigan State was 0 for 9 with the man advantage.

The Sooners are now 17-0-0 on the season while Michigan State is now 6-7-0. The Sooners have next week off for the Thanksgiving holiday and will return to action on December 1st and 2nd when they host Missouri State.

Rhode Island got swept this weekend. Sooners should move up a slot in the poll next time.

I won't hold my breath on that. #2 Rhode Island was swept by #4 Penn State. I'd bet those two simply swap spots.

Except that OU beat Penn State on neutral ice earlier this season...

Any divided loyalties on this one, Marc? ;)

Nope... I didn't go to MSU, nor did my wife - just her parents bleed green. When OU and MSU play in basketball (and they have several times since Lindsay and I have been together, like during the NCAA tournament when Eddie Najera got knocked cold setting that pick at midcourt), it's Sooners all the way in my house. No question...

I know... and I hope I'm wrong, but considering how loyal the coaches seem to be toward those top teams in the poll I just worry that they'll give PSU a ton of credit and pay less attention to our victory over them. Maybe I'm just being a naysayer... hope I'm mistaken.

Edit: I just noticed that #1 Illinois also lost a game this weekend. Now that might shake things up a bit!
