View Full Version : Should Halzle have played?

I was screaming at the end of the 3rd to put Halzle in. With all the adversity that this team has been through this year, it seemed to me that the smart play would be to put in the backup QB, get him some playing time and keep Paul Thompson safe.

Any other thoughts?

I guess the coaches don't believe in getting the back-ups any experience until they get thrown in the fire as starters.

Bob really doesn't know what the heck he's doing.

It's obvious.

I think the Heisman race had a lot to do with it back in 03 and 04.
How many blowouts did White finish the game? a bunch if I remember right.
I dont know why we didnt do it today, except perhaps we are so used to being in a tight finish, they didnt realize we were gonna win this one sometime in the 3rd qtr.

Is it possible we are hoping to get a BCS game?

Could a strong finish to each game affect that?

If Stoops handed out cash some people would whine about which bill they got.

I wouldnt whine, is there a long line though?

I can never find a place that'll break a $100. I demand $20s.

This thread wasn't posted to be considered whining. I am really happy to get the win, and thought that other than the turnovers, the team played an outstanding game.

But one thing that The King used to do with a lot of regularity is to get his 2nd and 3rd teamers a little experience when games were out of reach.

Plus, going into stoowater next weekend, why risk some sort of freak injury to Paul? I realize we haven't had any of those this season....

Stoops shouldnt stand on the sidelines either.

We all saw what happened to JoePa.

I think you can argue this point, but I do not believe that Halzle has even a sporting chance to take the starting job next year. If we knew for sure the backup was going to start the next year, then there is a good chance we would have seen Halzle or even Bradford. Add to that the fact that all we really did the 4Q was run the ball, so it's not like he missed out on any great learning opportunity.

I think he should have played. The game was well in hand and it would be good to get Halzle some snaps in the 4th quarter, even if he just handed the ball off.

No point if he is just going to hand the ball off. We fumbled enough times as it was, no need to up our chances of doing it again.

cant say enough for getting in-game experience, it counts, dont care if your just handing it off or not, game speed etc....come next year, if he's the guy, he needs to be on the field, he shoulda played.

No need to put Halze in the game. First, there is no indication that he is the man next year. Second, we only have 2 more games left this year. Not much need for experience this late in the season, it is PT all the way or we are screwed. Finally, PT has watched from the sideline long enough. I would let him play every snap of every game if he wanted to this season.

If Halze is our opening game starter next season, I might buy into getting him more playing time. If not, Bob is playing it perfectly. Plus, it might look better to QB recruits knowing that nobody will have any advantage next spring at QB.

I heard somewhere that playing time helps keep the backups focussed and motivated. It would have been good to see a back up in the game, but not a weeping issue.

I think Stoops should have went with Halzle in the Sugar Bowl- everybody could see Jason was too banged up to go.

I think I would have put him in for the last 2 series, but NOT to just hand the ball off.
If we we're not going to run the offense in the 4th qtr, then I say leave Paul in.

Taxman71
11/20/2006, 04:31 PM
I think mop-up game experience is overrated. A QB has to mentally prepare for a game and adjust throughout the course of the game. Going in for a series or two when the game is out of reach and the defense has lost its fundamentals and is stacking the box could cause more harm than good. Besides, if he goes against our #1 defense every day, he may have to learn to get used to the slow defenses we face in the Big 12.

...or maybe the coaches only allow those backups which deserve it to play.:pop:

Damn straight - it's probaly Bob's greatest challenge. If he there is any criticism at all, then it's this staffs' ability to get younger players ready for next year. Granted, we aren't afraid of playing the most talented, regardless of classification. However, there is simply no substitute for game experience.

Despite the success in austin, I strongly doubt a true freshman can lead the Big Red to where we want to go in 2007. There are very few Josh Heupel's out there and if we don't get a transfer, then we need to see Halzle and Bradford.

JMHO,

What if Bradford is 3/4 as good as Colt McCoy? I like our chances in that event.
