OKLAHOMA 3, MICHIGAN STATE 0

The No. 3-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club won their 16th game of the season Friday night, shutting out ACHA D2 powerhouse Michigan State by a score of 3-0. Sooners forward Doug Gebbie shocked the Spartans early with a goal just :58 seconds in to the game to give OU a 1-0 lead. However, MSU responded by taking the action to the Sooners for most of the rest of the first period. After the first intermission break, the Spartans turned up the offensive heat and kept most of the action in the Sooners’ defensive zone for much of the second period. With just less than a minute to go in the second stanza, Jordan Novak slipped a rebound shot into the Michigan State net to give the Sooners a 2-0 lead going into the second intermission. The third period started with MSU on a 5-on-3 power play. But the Sooners defense rose to the occasion and killed the 5-on-3, limiting the Spartans to just four shots with the two-man advantage. Those four shots were the only shots on goal MSU would get in the period as OU wore down the Spartans, keeping the puck in the MSU end of the rink for the majority of the period. The relentless pressure paid off for Oklahoma as Kevin Kennedy added an insurance goal for the Sooners at the 7:20 mark of the third to give OU a 3-0 lead.

Sooners goaltender Aaron Schmeilski was outstanding in net for the Sooners, earning his second shutout of the season with a 22 save performance. Michigan State’s Justin Sand stopped 29 of the 32 OU shots he faced on the evening. Neither team scored on the power play, with OU going 0 for 7 and MSU going 0 for 8 with the man advantage.

The Sooners are now 16-0-0 on the season. The loss drops Michigan State’s record to 6-6-0. The Sooners face the Spartans again Saturday night at 8:30 P.M. at the Blazers Ice Centre.
