Most dogs SHOULD be able to take what humans do, based on weight of the dog. This is a best guess coming from a people doctor, so I don't know that for a fact, but I've given my dog people antibiotics.

Lettuce. You'll probably have to coat it in salad dressing for him to eat it.

Most dogs will eat green grass when they feel the need.

I'm sure there is stuff at PetSmart.

you might also just try mineral oil. It may be a little tough to give it to the dog, but it'll slick em right up on the inside.

Might need to switch to some dog food with higher fiber.

Also, I would make sure and leave the dog outside. There is no telling what might happen after you give it something to make things flow. Stuff might just start squirting out of there like a water our of a spigit. You could end up with quite a carpet cleaning bill. Not to mention having to buy new furniture.

MOM..............

Milk of Mag. Just give them a weight appropriate dose.

Mineral Oil should also do the trick. Again, a weight appropriate dose.

Kaopectate would be more for if they have diarrhea. Of course, with diarrhea, I would suppose with a dog you would want to let the natural course of the body cleansing itself of anything they ate to clear itself out before trying to treat the diarrhea.

I would be likely to just let it run it's course and do some investigating to see who's been feeding the dog what to cause him/her to be all "stoved up". :D

If he eats too much bone it gets compacted in their system. The vet said that dogs nowadays have evolved to where they can't digest bone like they used to and it messes them up if they eat too much of it.

Unless the dogs live with Dean and THEY'LL EAT BONE AND LIKE IT, DAMMIT!!!

I've never heard any vet say that. In fact the BARF diet(look it up ;) ) is suppose to be the healthiest way to feed a dog but it takes a very "dedicated" person to do it.

Now back to your snoozer. What exactly is he doing (or not doing heh)? Is there any swelling around the gut area, if you squeeze the stomach is it hard at all? This could be nothing more than constipation but it could be a very serious issue.

achiro
11/14/2006, 04:38 PM
and yes I am a chiro but I have raised, bred, and trained retrievers for several years. You have to learn some basic vet stuff if you have enough animals for enough time.

BlondeSoonerGirl

I heard the vet say it when I took the dog in because she spent two days trying 'to go' and couldn't because her intestines were packed with bone fragments so tight she was bound-up beyond her ability to pass it.

They got a metal rod and dug the stuff out manually. It was very rough. The dog had a stroke during all of this and was never the same. She was an older dog, though so maybe she wasn't strong enough to handle something like that.

One of the most awful things I've ever seen...:(

Also, I'm sure you know not to give a dog chocolate. It's doggie poison.

We've had to take Rio in twice for surgery to fish sox out of her lower g.i. This last time she couldn't go, we didn't go for surgery. About a week later, she passed what appeared to be half a superball.

This reminds me of the time my dog apparently ate kite string or something in that ball park.

Imagine seeing your dog post BM dragging string from its arse. Then, imagine having to pull about 10 feet of string from the inside of your dog out of its arse. Not a good time.

Sorry, didn’t mean to make it sound like I was chewing you out or anything. :)

I think I read that if your dog is acting fine, then it’s best to cut off the string and let it come out on its own. But I’m not a vet and I don’t play one on TV, so you might want to call your vet next time and see what he says. :)
